Drawing musical instruments

There are a number of considerations to make when drawing instruments, this is primarily more important of a consideration when you are depicting instruments with a figure, how they’re holding it, where they put their hands, what they’re holding, etc.

All of the subtleties matter in conveying the correct level of expertise.
Just like art, if they aren’t aware that it is something to pay attention to, they won’t know, but even if someone doesn’t play a specific instrument, they will know enough about music to know it doesn’t look right.

There’s a lot to think about when drawing musicians -> (by extension, other specialists will also have profession specific quirks to consider)

This isn’t including electronic music like synths, dj turntables, or large instruments.

There’s all sorts of things to do with posture, dynamics and ways of playing that will adjust what you’re drawing. The best way is to watch people in action as they play. A folk band in a local is going to play in a very different way to an organised formal orchestra.

This is also the case for what type of music you’re drawing for. Certain instruments are more likely to show up in certain environments -> eg you’re not dragging a timpani around town for a marching band, not unless it has some killer wheels, but you’re going to see a plethora of brass and drums of all kinds.

While other instruments are typically associated with certain types of music due to things such as availability or the sounds and ways of playing.

Drawing an instrument on it’s own is just a technical exercise, but if you want to depict music in action, you’re going to want to think about everything around the topic too.

This might seem very pedantic, but trust me, a musician can tell when you f up. They will be ruthless.

Rarely is it going to matter if you depict nth technique perfectly, but if you’re going to be doing an animation about music and what’s being played isn’t matching what’s going on screen, it’s going to look very very very weird and people will laugh and make an analysis video about everything you got wrong

The alternative perspective is that people will appreciate the amount of detail you’re including. Playing a very niche instrument and seeing that someone took the time to check some chord patterns is a very specific kind of understanding.

I managed to make it sound so serious wtf, look it just means paying attention to stuff like a character not choking out a guitar or holding a flute as a sword as if they’re ready to mug someone. (I mean unless that’s the fun schtick - cartoon bards who use instruments as weapons - this is what I mean by matching the style to the purpose)
