Misinformation Alert: Worshipping Selene, Hades, and Using Titles!!
Hello everyone ^_^!! I want to share something important today. Recently, I heard some claims information online about Hellenic worship that really confused and worried me. Claims like:
“You can only worship Selene if you’re pregnant!”
“You can’t worship Hades or Persephone as Underworld rulers!”
“Using titles like Lord/Lady/Father/Mother/Queen/King to the gods is disrespectful!”
I was kinda worried a lot and thought I was doing something wrong. But I decided to research instead of just believing it everything on the Internet. And I want to share, you guys, of what I found so that you don’t have to feel confused too!!
[No1: Selene]
˖⌗🌙﹒.𖥔About Selene˖⌗﹒🌙.𖥔
There is a claim that “ONLY pregnant women can worship Selene.”
⚠️This is false!!⚠️
1- Source: In the Homeric Hymn 32 to Selene, she is called a sign and token to “mortal men” (meaning all humans).
2- Source: In the Orphic Hymn 9, she is invoked by “suppliants” (anyone praying) for peace, wisdom, and protection, and not just fertility.
The actual truth: Selene welcomes everyone. Artists, travellers, students, men, women, non-binary folks, literally everyone can honour the Goddess of Moon.
[No2: Hades & Persephone]
˖⌗ ☠️﹒.𖥔About Hades & Persephone˖⌗﹒. 💐𖥔
Some say “you can’t worship them as King and Queen of the Underworld”.
⚠️This is also false!!⚠️
1- Source: The Homeric Hymn to Demeter explicitly literally calls Persephone “Queen (Potnia)” and honours her alongside Aidoneus (Hades).
2- Source: Pausanias records temples and statues dedicated to them.
The actual truth: They were worshipped deeply in ancient Greece (especially at Eleusis). Using respectful names like Plouton or Kore is ancient practice, but honouring them as Hades and Persephone is not forbidden.
[No3: Titles & Respect]
˖⌗﹒.𖥔About Titles (Lord/Lady/King/Queen/Mother/Father)˖⌗﹒.𖥔
Some say using English titles is disrespectful.
⚠️I disagree!! and here’s why⚠️
1- Source: Ancient hymns used titles like, Anassa/Ἄνασσα (Queen, Lady, Mistress), Mētēr (Mother), patēr/πατήρ or Πατήρ (Father), and Anax/Ἄναξ (King, Lord, or Master). [If you are greek, please correct if I’m wrong]
The actual truth: Using titles like “King Zeus” or “Lady Hestia” in English is a way to show respect and acknowledge their divinity. Capitalizing Their names, for example (Hera vs. hera) or (Apollon vs apollon.). This can actually show respect, too, if you didn’t know. distinguishes Them as Persons, not things. It is an act of honour and respect, NOT “disrespect” the gods.
To the people acting like experts who know everything without doing basic research: This is your opinion, NOT fact. You shouldn’t tell people what they are doing is wrong based on tiny, ignored sources. You are spreading misinformation in our religion!
You CAN call the Gods “Lady/Lord/Mother/Father/King/Queen” with respect and with honor (not for aesthetics or kink). Literally, if you check any book or go to Theoi.com, find a god, scroll down to their Hymns and Cult sections, you will see that the Ancient Greeks literally called them “Mother,” “Father,” “Queen,” and “King”!!
I always call them that because they are easy English words, and I say them to my Gods with respect and love and to honor them and their Titles. You can still choose to call them by their Greek titles if you want, but you should NOT tell people they are wrong or demand they listen to you when, in reality, you are the one spreading lies.
A Quick Reminder on Epithets!!
Because I know some of you may be confused..
While it is okay to use titles like “Lord” or “Lady,” I recommend also using the Gods’ Epithets when you pray or recite Hymns. An epithet is a specific title that honours a certain part of a God (like Zeus Xenios, which honours him as Zeus of hospitality). You can find these on Theoi.com or Hellenion.org. Using epithets actually can help you connect more deeply with the specific ‘side’ of the God you are speaking to!! You just sometimes need specific words and not just “Lord”, “Lady”, “King”, “Mother”, “Father”, And “Queen”, you should always know what is Epithets and what they are used for.
My Message to You Guys:
I’m just a beginner too. I’m still learning. But I believe we should FIRST research before we spread misinformation or believe everything someone says without checking sources.
If you feel called to worship Selene, Hades, or any God, you are allowed. You are welcome. The Gods will welcome you and care for you if you approach Them with respect and love.
Please do your own research too!!
Check sources like:
Theoi.com (It has info on every god! Go read their Hymns, and prayers and Cult sections! They also have Titles and Epithets of what ancient greeks used to call them)
Perseus Digital Library
Reputable Hellenic organizations
Don’t just trust everything on TikTok. It is FULL of misinformation!!!
Blessed Be!!
