Little Soul

By Hadrian
Translated by W. S. Merwin

Little soul little stray
little drifter
now where will you stay
all pale and all alone
after the way
you used to make fun of things

I wonder if Antinous was scared of aging. His beauty was the only thing that mattered, to the point that it’s the only thing we know about him. Maybe he thought he’d be useless. Oh god what if that why he jumped in the Nile?

Just finished Shadows Upon Time. Needless to say im distraught. But heres some more suneater art for the culture. Im in the process of doing lineups of the rest of the red company (at the very least Lorian and Bassander) to cope with the loss that I have finished one of my favorite series of all time. I may or may not design more covers we shall see….

It’s probably not a real quote but a nice idea (and I am aware of the irony)

Great things I found during my research for “The Emperor’s Face”: an article about the creases in Hadrian’s ears. Yes. And it potentially having a connection to coronary heart disease. Here, have some screenshots of the article:

“competitive, achievment-oriented, involved in multiple activities with deadlines, impatient with slowness in others, like to set a rapid work pace, and tend to be hostile and aggressive”. yea, some of that I picked up in my depiction of Hadrian. Not everything, though.

But the best part of the article is this, that follows right after:

And here, The Emperor’s Ear. The only thing consistent in ALL his portraits, they are otherwise pretty different from eachother.

The crease clearly visible across the earlobe.

The whole article is here: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/instance/1271965/pdf/westjmed00233-0096.pdf

Two marble busts. On the left is Hadrian, a bearded man wearing a tunic. On the right is Antinous, a young, unbearded man with a wreath in his hair.ALT

Today is the birthday of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, born on 24 January in 76CE. His statue is pictured here (left) beside a statue of his lover, Antinous.

In 130CE, Antinous drowned in the Nile. In his grief, Hadrian named a flower and a star after Antinous, founded the city of Antinoopolis, and made Antinous into a god. So many statues of Antinous were made that he became one of the most commonly depicted people in the Graeco-Roman world.

I’ve spent so much time thinking about these two. Now it’s only a couple of weeks until the novel is out in the world.

(Im up to the part in Shadows Upon Time where Hadrian is basically FaceTiming Kedron and he describes his own hair as extremely long and put in a side ponytail and to say i was pacing around my room like a rabid dog after reading that is an understatement)
