MBA Group Projects: 5 Types of Teammates You’ll Always Meet

MBA group projects are meant to build leadership, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving skills. But let’s be honest—every project feels like a crash course in people management. No matter the college, specialization, or semester, these five types of teammates show up every single time. If you’ve done an MBA, this will feel too real. Explore More: https://ternagbs.in/

1 - The Silent Observer

Present in every meeting, active in the WhatsApp group… but mysteriously quiet when work is assigned.
They agree to everything and deliver just before the deadline (or sometimes after). Minimal effort, maximum suspense.

2 - The Overachiever

Slides? Done. Research? Extra sources added. Design? Color-coded.
This teammate treats every project like a final placement presentation. Inspiring… and slightly intimidating.

3 - The Leader (Self-Appointed)

They take charge without being asked—setting deadlines, assigning tasks, and calling meetings.
Sometimes a blessing, sometimes a control freak, but without them the project might not move at all.

4 - The Last-Minute Magician

Disappears for days and suddenly reappears with “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it tonight.”
Surprisingly delivers decent work—right before submission.

5 - The Creative Thinker

Full of big ideas, unique frameworks, and innovative angles.
Execution may be shaky, but they’re the reason your project stands out from the rest.

Group Work Ettiquite Part 3

Whatever you do, do not make the project more complicated than it needs to be for your group. You are just wasting time if you do this.

For example, if you are working on a presentation in which format style doesn’t matter, do not be the one who makes presence everything that it takes time away from the actual substance of the project and confuses your peers over what should be done. It creates more anxiety to not only everyone around you, but you yourself included. So don’t make it worse for anyone, period.

So uh... Can I get some opinions on a situation?

So for one of my programming classes we were paired up and given a week to do an assignment together. I worked with this partner on the previous assignment as well and ended up having to do most of the work, but whatever. I figured this was gonna end up being the same situation, and it has been.

HOWEVER, this time around I ran into an issue that would’ve been a pain to debug on my own computer. I don’t live on campus so I don’t have access to any of the computers at school right now, and I really didn’t want to dig out my laptop and set it up with the stuff i’d need… So I sent my partner a text that basically said “Hey, ive got most of the project for tomorrow done already, but could you real quick try running this code for me and tell me if it actually works or not? And if it doesn’t can you just send me the error it gives you?” Like thats seriously all I wanted. Its at most like a 2 minute task.

Im used to people being lazy about doing stuff and leeching work off me, and honestly half-expected him to just not respond (which would have been annoying but it happens all the time so whatever), but this dude, no joke, messages back telling me to “shut the fuck up and leave him alone about school shit.”

So uh… thats a first?

Managed to figure it out on my own and ive got everything mostly done at this point, and i’m gonna be handing it in for tomorrow… but im really tempted to email my professor and let him know because i’ll be damned if someones gonna get credit for not only doing nothing but also being an ass towards me?? At the same time though, im hyper-empathetic and tend to overthink things so idk if the dudes got like a personal/family emergency that came up suddenly and I was just messaging him at a really bad time. So like… What do you guys think I should do?

passive aggressive science fact of the day

jellyfish don’t have brains, yet their species have survived for hundreds of millions of years and even found a way to almost “cheat” death. however, my group members in my final project do have brains but still manage not to do any of the work that was divided for them.

Group Projects Really Irk Me Sometimes

As a high school student, group projects always seem to be an inevitable evil that must be conquered. While I see the benefit in them when it comes to working with others, learning when and how to lead or follow, and learning social skills, I have come to really hate them.

This is mostly inspired by a group project I currently have, in which I must make a film with three other people (and two people that we have added as actors). I usually end up in a leading position in a group whether I like it or not, and in this case, I do not like it. Like the popular caricature of teenagers, my fellow group members are lazy, disorganized, and generally unmotivated. This is very difficult considering the project is due on Monday (June 3) and we have been unable to film on two separate occasions on the account of certain group members coming forty minutes late to our meeting and one of them being completely unprepared in every single way possible, while wanting to make all the decisions and generally refusing to compromise. I have done many group projects, but I can easily say that none of them have been as difficult as this one.

Working with this group makes me wish I had taken the daring option of creating a movie by myself. When I think about it, I might have been almost finished by now. However, the challenge seemed too daunting when groups were being formed, and so I stuck with the supposedly safer option. And I deeply regret it.

The level of procrastination in this group is quite mind-boggling, considering it took about five days and constant reminding to simply get a 20 second monologue from one of my group members. I even lent my camera to one of my group members so they could film without me once, and yet they decided not to. The amount of stress and general annoyance truly makes me hope to never have to work with them again.

So, with three members who seem to wish the “that one kid who doesn’t do anything” role in the group, I am left with the bulk of the work anyways. I came into this project knowing that it would be at least somewhat difficult to get everything together, but I have been very unpleasantly surprised. Hopefully, I never have to work with this particular group of peers or a similar group ever again in my academic career, but that may be asking for too much.

In cases like this one in particular, group projects are easily the bane of my existence, which really ruin the good group projects I have had where I work with other people who are diligent in their work and on top of things. It is groups like these that make me so hesitant and biased towards group work. However, when I get those rare, shining gems of groups, I am incredibly thankful.

When your group agrees on the wrong thing and you know they’re wrong but they outnumber you 11 to 1

You try to correct them but they all say you’re wrong

When the teacher tells them they’re wrong about that one thing you knew they were wrong about

When they ask for your help with the thing they were wrong about

You aced that group project

A Good Journey

The process of this project was to take 3 postcards and come up with an idea. We created Mr.Pickles the cucumber who found himself having to use the underground to get to work where he steps on a baby shoe and creates annoyance among his tube shoe friends. Leading to him being squashed when leaving the train and left trampled on the platform.

I created a concept design for Mr.Pickles and rough idea for the shoes before moving on the try and buy the pieces we needed to create the character and switching to making the set up work for the green of the cucumber by using blue screen. Some sections of the film was stop motion like the baby shoe while others were just recorded footage with the camera while using dragon frame as a reference of where the puppets needed to be for certain shots. We used  Silhouette and Long Exposure animation for extra elements in the environment.

The Eyes of the characters were all animated in TV Paint apart for the last section which Paola had to animate in Photoshop.

All the footage was later passed on to Stephen for editing I helped try and direct some scenes, specially after comments of the crit trying to make the corrections that were needed. I think we should have as a group sat together to work on sound design to try and create some original music but the final result was still good.

Een goede reis gewenst - A Good Journey

First week back to University and we were tasked with grouping into to groups of 3-5 selecting postcards blindly and coming up with a concept with the selected images in categories “Character”, “Environment” and “Situation”. During idea discussion time I partnered up with Stephen and Naomi as we came up with an idea using these three cards with the bonus of Stephen’s Subway/underground post card. Later we had the addition of Paola joining us who helped assist in Digital animation and puppeting when filming final shots.

My selection of cards were all Film Noir styled cards, lately I’ve worked with a lot of black and white and red colours and was hoping to try something maybe a bit more colourful even though the idea of creating a collage animation on a multi plane with these cards might have been interesting.

Dutch translation on card number two was the big inspiration for this short project with it translating to “A Good Journey”. We came up with the concept of having a cucumber going to work after he can’t get out of his road with his car due to roadworks so he takes the underground where he steps on a child and causes anger among the shoes. He ends up getting stamped on left along squashed on the platform.

We plan to use as many techniques as we could for this project and test which one would be best for this project.

Man, I hate it when you do a group project and you suddenly realise that your part seems less important when you’ ve put already so much time in it and they will grad you based on what you have written and it seems like you did nothing important, while you helped your teammates. Especially if you part is almost finished but now they ignore your ask for help (some are busy so no shad to them). But seriously, we sat together because our groupproject was going badly and everyone promissed to help where possible and then you get this. If I can finish my shit, I can move on and do other thing perhaps. Or at least I would worry a little less. But nooooo.

Group Work Ettiquite Part 2

If you’re going to be a hypocrite to your group members, then are you really a good group member?

For example, if a group member is an anticipator (see previous post of this series) and you completely disregard this crucial information and say that you don’t care (if you are not an anticipator), you cannot go ahead and mock that person by telling them to get their job done as soon as possible. Especially if they are learning a more efficient and less stressful way of managing their time. You are making things worse between you and that person as you are disrespecting them this way. Treat one another with respect. Understand that person and reach a compromise. Stop being selfish and consider that person’s feelings too. As a matter of fact, respect the feelings and needs of ALL of your group members. You also need to respect that everyone has their own things as well. The world does not revolve around you ya know. You never know what’s actually going on in that person’s life.

I versus We

I say “I did this”

My Manager wants me to say “We did this”

We didn’t come in on Saturdays to run verifications. I did.

We didn’t come in at 1 am because we couldn’t sleep due to the stress of a critical deadline. I did.

We don’t takes the time hit when shit doesn’t work out. I do.

We didn’t stay late at night to make sure Software and Hardware got what they needed. I did.

Where is We in the two project I’ve destroyed my life to complete? Where was WE then? No where to be fucking seen.

Because it’s never a WE, it’s always that one person going the extra mile doing everything to make WE look good.

Well, I guess this me will work at the same level as WE. Because it’s not WE who takes the hit when shit the fans.

It’s blame falls squarely at my feet. I get blamed, I get reprimanded, I take the professional hit every fucking time when things don’t work.

So fuck your WE. If I don’t see anyone putting in the same amount of time and work on the same project, then there is no WE.

You want me to say we, then I guess I will change to match what the other parts of WE are doing. Because I will be damned if I put in all this work for a fucking WE. When WE isn’t killing themselves to get the fucking thing done.

We don’t hold resentments for being lied to and manipulated into a position they wanted to not be a part of in the first place. I do.

I was told all sorts of different things over the years yet I am doing the same things I was doing 2 years ago with a shiny new title to mask it from reality. I don’t get the new and fun things to do.

That is given to other people. I get to do the sustaining work. I get to do the fucking installations and changes to current software. Because the person you told me would take over all that is incapable of doing it. Because it’s never given to them as a priority.

Well I am done killing myself for a WE. I’m just going to work at a WE pace. Whatever WE is doing I guess I’ll follow that. No more weekend, no more over 60+ work weeks. Fuck these deadlines, fuck these projects. Fuck it all.

Ive been collabing on a project with other artists. Its so amazing to see what can come of putting your head together on things. Each person has a unique style and perspective. Everyone brings their own bit of magic to the table.

Some of my best ideas come from other people. Something they say or do inspires me. The other day someone alsed if I was going to make a part of a drawing purple. And I wasnt going to, but im glad I did. That idea came from aonther brain but it was done by my hand. Thats a collab too!

If any other artists want to collab let me know!
