Chapter 118
the paneling is wonderful here, the dark unknown in the foreground, the cast white nothing Luffy and Vivi and in and the incredibly textured neverending forrest in front of them -it showcases perfectly that there is someone, but they have no clue who or where
[[MORE]]We learn that it’s the Baroque works and I like how we see Mr. 3’s power already, without being told what exactly they are, but it’s nice to get some old enemies we’ve wiped the floor with back, because while it makes sense that explosive rum was from the guy that can make stuff explode, because he just got defeated so hard last time, you don’t automatically think of him. It’s a simple and great trick.
Chapter 119

His priorities are just great. It’s not about the stupid 100 year fight, it’s that this isn’t fair. They should be free to do what they want and they can’t because someone else went inbetween them.
Honestly having it start off with Mr 3 and the fact that we’re not facing enemies who don’t just throw fists at you is great, also lowkey horror vibes:

It’s also why the fight between Luffy and Usopp is incredibly important and needed to happen.
Chapter 120
and it’s not earned
Mr. 3 does not get it. Not at all.
Loyalty is such a big point in One Piece, but it always amazed me how simple and effective it is.
We have early example like Chouchou protecting the store against an overgrown lion and Karoo refusing to back down all the way to nothing happening to Zoro and Killer eating a smile.
He’s a terrible person, but he has style.
Chapter 121
The realisation in Brogy’s face is so good. Panel after panel he gets it. He shouldn’t have won. And Mr. 3 is there not caring about a fair win, just a win in contrast.
It’s clobbering time! (Fantastic four three theme starts playing)

What I do find interesting is that this isn’t seen as a battle, although it technically is one. But because Mr. 3 snuck up and tricked around it doesn’t quality.
Is it a terrible plan -obviously. Is there any other plan -not really.
and it’s also not about that -it’s about not giving up, even when it looks hopeless
Chapter 123
I love how basically no one but Vivi take the situation seriously.
And then there’s Galdino’s utterly wrong assessment of Luffy (quick reminder those two will break out of Impel Down together in like 3 months).
This is very cool. All of it.
Mr. 3 learned nothing, Luffy however did.
What a way to end the chapter. She’s been so much in the brackground you basically forget about her and then she just gets Luffy offscreen.

My guess as to the whole little garden snail call is that it would have been the first time Crocodile had contacted anyone (sans Robin) directly, and thus wouldn’t have recognized Galdino’s voice.
He would have known about the black transponder snails from working with the WG and having black market connections, so he wouldn’t risk his voice getting recognized over a burner call.
Until the Unluckies informed him of the disaster at Whiskey Peak (idk how, but One Piece), and the fact that he hasn’t got that scheduled update from Galdino.
Desperate times, desperate measures.
Also he probably just wanted to scare the bejesus out of Galdino, let’s be real.
Edit: Nevermind, Crocodile really was just a dumbass there.

The metal of the hook is cold on Galdino’s throat as Crocodile lifts his chin up, leering smugly down at him.
The boss of Cross Guild arranges him how he likes, the same as he’s always done, when he was a Warlord, and when he was simply his captain.
Galdino’s heart thumps in his chest as Crocodile’s lips brush his cheek and track lower, not stopping until they’re beside the hook against his neck. He moans at the biting, sucking kisses that follow, squirming and biting his lip at the dizzying sensation.
Caught in the jaws of the terrible Crocodile.
