Data cleansing. How very dull, and frustrating! A colleague at Cambridge very kindly sent me a spreadsheet of all the data from the Early Medieval Corpus of Coin Finds (EMC) relating to William I and II. This will form the basis of my initial scoping exercise, before I get down to playing with actual coins. However, I want to put it into a database (which I will find more useful for analysis). Therefore I need to go through all the data and check that it’s in the format which I need. It’s taking a while!
I suppose this is one of the issues of modern, digital research: there’s so much more data available, and it’s so easy to get hold of, but it all requires processing before you can actually start using it. I hadn’t really factored this stage of work into my timetabling and planning - I’ll definitely need to consider it more carefully as I go along.
For now, though, Classic FM’s festive tunes are helping me get through c.3000 records of unclean (hehe!) data…
This link came to me today by way of a phone call from Ireland. John Bryne, it turns out, viewed my video presentation on how I use Mendeley and Zotero to do collaborative research in philosophy. He picked up the phone to call my office and I spoke with him for a few minutes this afternoon.
John is a 72 year old MA student writing his thesis in Ethics in Ireland and who is trying to figure out the best workflow to accomplish this. More power to him!
It was wonderful to speak with him, not only because he is a fellow scholar doing interesting research, but also because he was compelled enough by some of the things I have posted to call me up. If it had been a tweet or an email, it would have been very nice, but to hear the excitement and appreciation in his voice was particularly moving.
Our conversation was followed up by an email from him, which included a link to this site by by @DrSustainable, which I found helpful enough to share out to you.
The internet can be a very alienating and intimidating place, but it also can be extremely kind, generous and touchingly human. I thank John for reminding me of the later today.
