The Pythagorean Chart is possibly the most common and well-known of the plethora of Numerological charts in use in the Western World today. The origins of this method, while named after the Grecian mathematician, has very little to do with him. Modern numerology harkens back only about a century to the work of American music teacher, L. Dow Balliett who began applying some core concepts of Pythagoras’ theory of mathematics to the English Language around 1903. Ruth A. Drayer’s book, Numerology, The Power in Numbers published in 2001 says that Mrs. L. Dow Balliett combined Pythagoras’ work with Biblical reference. Then on Oct 23, 1972, Balliett’s student, Dr. Juno Jordan, changed Numerology further and helped it to become the system known today under the title “Pythagorean.”
The chart itself is very straightforward. The letters of the English Alphabet are assigned a number value from 1 - 9 and a color code that denotes a certain “theme” or “higher meaning” for that number. This chart is used to convert words such a personal names, street addresses, or landmark names such as cities or countries into a single number which can then be divined for their numerological meaning and color association through basic addition. It goes something like this:
Johnny Smith
1+6+8+5+5+7+1+4+9+2+8 = 56
5+6 = 11
1+1 = 2 = Orange
Johnny Smith’s name number is 2 which corresponds to the color orange, both of which indicate certain traits or qualities about Johnny that are inherent in him, may define his life path, or can provide insight into his future. This number is sometimes referred to as the Destiny Number, Life Path Number, or the Personal Power Number. There are a lot of takes on what each number and color mean, but essentially there is a consensus on a few points.
Name #1: rules the mind, strong intellect, thoughtful, wise
Name #2: peaceful, helpful, gentle, youthful
Name #3: good luck, fortunate, fame-seeker, memorable
Name #4: cautious, suspicious, paranoid, not quick to success
Name #5: broad viewpoints, tolerant, strong-hearted, good companions
Name #6: friendly, compassionate, occult-seekers, spiritualistic
Name #7: frank, outspoken, freedom-seeker, independent
Name #8: strugglers, difficulties abound, obstacle-leaper, depressed
Name #9: strong-willed, endurance, expressive, ill-fated

Rose: strength, love, leader, kind, gentile
Gold: joyous, boisterous, understanding, celebrant, raucous
Using this method is far less intuitive than most forms of divination that we have covered on this blog, but can be revealing in many instances. This information, divined from numbers in people’s names can be an insightful accompaniment to something such as a natal chart reading, tarot spread, or scrying someone’s aura. Alone, this method is more fun and possibly useful for self-centric meditations and the selection of colors that may suit sacred spaces in your home, office, or ritual areas.
So what is your Destiny Number?
