Digital drawing stylized to look like a yellowed comic book page of Maxine Hunkle in her Cyclone costume. She stands with her fists clenched at her sides, confidently smiling with her hair and costume blowing in the wind. The costume is tweaked so that the leggings go all the way up her legs and her tunic is longer in the front and back, with the leg slits have loose laces that go to the mid-thigh.ALT

Cyclone (1978)

My rating: 6/10

Very little budget, the dub is utter rubbish, and everybody remains oddly clean and well-coiffed during their Ordeal ™, but there’s some decent “dreadful algebra of necessity” stuff to be had in the script.

Meet the Muse !

Hero Name: Cyclone (yes, because of the song)
Civie Name: Lety Mendes
Powers: wind manipulations, she controls the oxygen molecules
Crimes: contempt of authority, theft, robbery, assault, grand theft auto
She/Her - Bisexual - Bilingual (eng/pt-br)

Lore: Lety’s in her mid twenties and was admitted into the Phoenix Program as an administrative assistant, which very quickly turned into being Blazer’s assistant. At some point, after the Z-Team was already stablished, she had to step in when their most recent Dispatcher quit halfway through the day. Now she dispatches for team whenever their actual dispatcher’s unavailable (although Z-Team is her favorite… don’t tell them that) It’s rare she has to join teams on the field but it’s happened a handful of times after Robert took over the Phoenix Program.

I was thinking about Cyclone and the way he idolises Ice and how he knows losing Ice devastates Maverick. (Sorry, this is a really long essay)

I imagine him as a very upright and sensible young man joining the navy and learning to fly, but already aware that his talents lie in leadership and command, not flying.

And maverick is the kind of cocky, swaggering pilot that makes life hell for people like Cyclone.

Ice though - cool, calm, determined - he’s a role model for Cyclone. And ice recognises that this is a young man who maybe needs a little extra guidance, needs a little extra protection from his boisterous colleagues, takes him under his wing - as is Ice’s way.

(There’s something about Ice in Top Gun. He genuinely cares about everyone around him. He wants to keep them safe)

And Cyclone imprints on Ice. He is in awe. He worships him. Ice’s only flaw, he feels, is to always have that cocky bastard Maverick around. Not that Maverick pay the slightest attention to Cyclone - he’s too busy failing as a Top Gun Instructor and flying dangerous somewhere.

Then one day Cyclone goes to see Ice unexpectedly - and through the window of the office see Ice and Maverick kissing.

Cyclone hurries away. He knows he ought to report them. It would destroy both their careers but he’s been taught it’s wrong, that kind of behaviour.

But he doesn’t want to destroy Ice’s career. Thinking about it, it changes nothing about Ice. He still idolises the man, and believes the man deserves to be idolised. And as for Maverick - he looked at Ice with absolute love in his eyes.

And now, thinking about, Cyclone can’t see what’s wrong with any of that. And for the first time in his life he thinks maybe the rules are wrong.

He doesn’t tell anyone. But his respect for Ice grows.

And so Cyclone’s career continues. He grows up through the ranks. He’s well aware that he has a reputation for being too safe, for being too rigid, for sticking close to the rules. But he bends them, secretly, once in while. And he continues to talk to Ice. He continues to worship him.

Maverick continues to be a wild flyer and exactly the kind of pilot that gets on Cyclone’s nerves.

But the more time goes on, and the more attitudes change, the less Ice and Maverick hide what they are to each other. And Cyclone recognises this is the real thing, real love. And he firmly cracks down on anyone making smart remarks about them.

And then he extends that to anyone making prejudicial remarks or treating people badly. No one gets away with that, not around him. (It’s causes problems with the older navy men. But one day Ice smiles at him and says ‘you’re a good man, Cyclone. Hope I had a little to do with that’ and it’s all worthwhile)

And then on day Ice says ‘I’m calling in a favour. I’m sending you Maverick. Keep an eye on him for me will you?’

Cyclone hates this. Maverick is exactly the kind of cocky pilot that ignores the rules that cyclone hates. He hates that stupid grin (although he is reluctantly impressed he didn’t take the Top Gun credit from Ice). He’s annoyed by Mav’s attitude to teaching. He’s puzzled that somehow Mav appears to come attached to Hondo, despite Hondo not being included in orders (they come as a pair, Ice says. Believe me, you do not want a Maverick without Hondo). He struggles, but does his best and sends a report to Ice every evening.

And when Ice dies, Cyclone is devastated- but Maverick stands in front of him broken-hearted, broken, lost and all alone in the world.

Cyclone tries to do things his way. But Mav won’t give up. Of course not. This is Ice’s last wish.

And cyclone recognises the truth behind Mav’s desire to fly. Perhaps - perhaps Mav doesn’t want to come back from this mission. Not now Ice isn’t there.

If Ice isn’t there to smooth Mavericks path any more, maybe he should do what Ice would have done and give Maverick what he wants. So Mav flies.

Cyclone Harry: Devastation Across Southern Italy (Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia)

In late January 2026, Cyclone Harry, one of the most powerful Mediterranean storms in recent memory, slammed into southern Italy — battering Sicily, Calabria, and Sardinia with hurricane-force winds, torrential rains, and storm surges.

Widespread Impact

The storm unleashed waves up to 9–10 meters high along coastlines, flooding coastal towns, eroding beaches, and destroying roads and seaside infrastructure. Heavy rainfall triggered landslides and flooding, washing out streets and cutting off communities.

In just a few days, some areas received rainfall amounts equivalent to nearly half of their annual average, overwhelming drainage systems and saturating soils.

Inland areas were not spared — high winds uprooted trees and debris blocked roads, while heavy precipitation triggered landslips and localized flooding, disrupting daily life and complicating emergency response.

Evacuations and Emergency Response

In Niscemi, Sicily, a massive landslide forced the evacuation of over 1,000 residents after a 4 km stretch of hillside collapsed — leaving homes dangerously perched and infrastructure unstable.

Sicily’s experience during Cyclone Harry once again revealed how climate extremes and chronic neglect of territory management combine to turn natural events into social and economic disasters.

Another dramatic episode in Calabria: A Cemetery Collapses Under the Storm

In the village of San Mauro Marchesato, in Calabria, the storm caused another harrowing scene: intense rainfall — over 180 mm in just 24 hours — triggered the collapse of part of the old cemetery, sending around twenty coffins tumbling down into the ravine below. The landslide not only destroyed sections of the cemetery’s structure but struck deeply at the local community’s sense of memory and dignity, as officials prepare for the lengthy and sensitive task of recovery once conditions allow.

Agricultural Sector Devastated

Calabria’s rural economy also sustained heavy losses: strong winds and water logging destroyed crops and damaged farm infrastructure. The regional government has formally requested recognition of a state of agricultural calamity to unlock financial support for affected farmers and producers.

Government Action

The Italian government declared a state of emergency for the three regions and allocated initial funds for urgent relief and recovery.

Economic Toll

Early estimates place the total economic damage in the billions of euros, with significant losses to infrastructure, homes, agricultural lands, businesses, and tourism activities.

No Reported Fatalities

Despite the storm’s severity, officials reported no confirmed deaths, highlighting the effectiveness of warnings and evacuations.

Saturday 10th January 2026

It is a 30 minute Skybus ride from the airport into downtown Melbourne, and then a 25 min tram from Southern Cross Station to our new home for the week in the smart seaside town of Port Melbourne,; a rather bohemian, millennials sort of place with a predominance of vegan and vegetarian restaurants. As its name suggests, it is a Port, and the ferry, Spirit of Tasmania, puts to sea from here to Hobart, Tasmania six times a week. Our apartment is in a new build block not far from where we stayed some years ago, in fact, it might be the same street. A most pleasing construction, surveying the equally pleasant town, but with no pretence to a sea view. However, should the feeling take one, the rooftop terrace affords more aspirational views across the Southern Ocean and if it were possible, the Antarctic far beyond.

Out to the west, last night, could be seen the glow of a 250 hectacre forest fire in the neighbourhood of Mallacoota; an area we visited in 2019, which was devastated soon after by fire ripping through the eucalyptus and pine forests. Some councils have since banned, so I’m told, replanting of these species due to the flammable and explosive nature of their constitution. Not, no doubt, a view supported by their natural companions, the koala. ABC news today was full of depressing stories of forest fires in the States of Victoria and New South Wales. The first cyclone of the year is about to make land fall between Cairns and Airlie Beach where we were last year. Plans are in place to evacuate people in certain areas. Also, Sydney, today, is suffering blistering heat of 43 degrees, and citizens have been warned that this level of heat kills, and they are advised to stay inside! We have had 27° today and strong winds after a night of thunder.

After 48 hours of travelling, we decided it was not going to be seen as unreasonable to enjoy a lie in. So we did, and to my knowledge, nobody complained. After a shopping expedition to Coles and the bottle shop, we went for a promenade along the promenade. The route took us along a familiar path with general disagreement about whether we had ever been there before.

Despite being so desperately tired last night that we could hardly stand, we did make a short excursion to the High St to try out the bar stools in the Exchange Hotel, which has a highly typical Australian Bar: rowdy, red-necked clientele having a charm of their own in a anthropological sort of way. However, a schooner each of Little Creatures IPA down our white necks, and it became too rowdy, so we made our excuses and left. An experience not repeated tonight, whilst not completely ruling out a return visit.

An enjoyable, quiet day familiarising ourselves to the place again.

ps Guess what was on the menu tonight? Answers on a postcard please.
