5 Top Tips to introduce STEAM learning at home

1 - LET THEM DO IT! Any lesson is more fun when you can touch, feel and build it yourself. Whether you are baking a cake together, building a paper rocket, or pumping up the bike tyres - let your kids do it or assist you with it! The hands-on approach is a fast track to learning.

2 - MAKE IT REAL! Problem solving, investigation, and discovery eliminates boredom. Real-world scenarios showcase exactly how and why concepts work. Especially when it comes to maths and science, it’s important to seek connections between the concepts and the real world. Here’s an example, teach fractions using those interlocking coloured blocks they love so much! Problem-solving has just become a real 3D task and much easier to retain the lesson.

3 - BRAIN STORM! Working together with your kids builds collaboration, communication, and social skills. It teaches teamwork, by pooling your ideas on how to upskill your projects they improve their sequencing skill when they have to explain their vision to your “team”.

4 - TALK IT OUT! If your kids are talking about it, then they are learning about it too! Encourage questioning, explanations, and curiosity. Verbalizing helps kids understand why things happen in a certain way.

5 - CONNECT THEM ALL TOGETHER! By intertwining science and art or maths and engineering we are forging a creative way to learn, invent and understand the real world.

When in lockdown it’s clearly time to sort out those bags of craft items that have been lurking in the back of the cupboard for a million years. I had Two large bin bags of carpet yarn. Not just any old carpet yarn but a tangled mass of short ends that were clearly the remnants of carpet projects that were made on a #carpetloom I had years ago.
Chaos into order I’ve now crocheted half of it into a wildly colourful rug.
What has been particularly lovely is working with the different colours and seeing how colours can be implied just by placing two contrasting tones next to each other. Pinky red and turquoise blue imply lilac just because the eye mixes the tones even though the colour is not actually there. Grey and orange imply olivey green. #fascinating #colourstudies #creativecrafts
