Had an insane interaction on my college campus today. There I was, minding my business, sitting at a table and some random dude sits across from me, I don’t stop him cause I don’t own the table.

We sit in silence for a bit before he starts the conversation, basic weather he goes “people are awful and no civilians realize how capable their neighbors are of murder and causing pain” goes on to recommend a movie about the cartel and says it has a scene where people are hung by their wrists over a freeway. He then points at some random person he doesn’t know (I went to high school with the guy he points at) and says, “he’d kill you if he wanted to” which is crazy to say to someone you haven’t even introduced yourself to.

Conversation dies down, I didn’t wanna sit in silence so I ask him what his major is, he’s in Construction Management.

I tell him I’m a History major with a prioritization in secondary education, he pauses and asks “what use is that in real life?” This man then continues to ask that if world war 3 happens what I would do, and without letting me answer he then goes “what’re you going to do in a zombie apocalypse? Teach the zombies history?”, dude basically called my major useless, like managing a construction site will make sure he survives the apocalypse.

That’s not even the craziest part, as he continues, find out he’s stationed at a nearby military base, that’s cool, says he’s living on campus, and then proceeds to talk about how “Ghetto” the city I grew up in is, I mean it is but like, he lives on campus in like the nicest area of the city. He also complained about his roommates which I feel is the tamest part of this whole thing “I live with band kids, they’re so arrogant, think they’re so cool because they play instruments” which is okay, I guess, you do you.

Somehow, this man goes from calling the city ghetto and complaining about roommates to talking about SCHOOL SHOOTING, idk how he got there, but all of a sudden he’s spouting crazy shit.

“school shooting wouldn’t happen so often if the students fought back, they out number the shooter and can overwhelm them” that’s where I really start with drawling from the conversation cause WTF, and then he continues “they could rush the shooter, sure the first row would get shot but then you just step over them and keep going” after that I tell him they’re just people, bit police and they’re not trained for anything like that, and then he goes “then they should make four years of military service mandatory” as if that would help the literal children who are victims of the shooting, like yeah, these first graders are trained soldiers, they served their country straight out the womb till the old age of 4!!

And at that point, I let the conversation die, and left, people are insane, and I shouldn’t have let that conversation go as long as it did.

Playing Hot Potato With conversation

Sometimes being in a conversation, it can die randomly.

How I see it is that you need to be really good at “Free Association”, as in a you have a word that makes you think of some thing else.

Ocean -> body of water -> salor-> sailor moon -> one piece

Conversation is a fluid thing, and you can get really crazy segways.

findingsunremarkable: I’m feeling a little discouraged. Like I stalled. The last week of the 2.5mg felt like the scale didn’t budge. And I was hungrier.

Zepbound: Dose increased to 5mg 2 days ago. 22 pounds down. That’s an additional 2 pounds. Those first 4 weeks were to get your body used to the meds, and you’re already making remarkable progress.

findingsunremarkable: To be fair, I was already down about 8 pounds from my highest ever. So I only lost 12 pounds in those first 4 weeks.

Zepbound: That’s 12 pounds in 4 weeks. 3 pounds per week. When was the last time you did that without having to battle yourself every minute of every day?

findingsunremarkable: True. And people are starting to notice. I don’t notice in the mirror. But I do notice how some of my clothes fit differently. I have a goal shirt and a goal pair of jeans. Both are getting closer to wearable.

Zepbound: Exactly. And you’re exercising to keep muscle. And you have a debilitating medical condition to contend with. Stop beating yourself up and focus on the good that’s happened. You’re so close to that first target outfit!

findingsunremarkable: You’re right. And I’m inching closer to that middle number on the scale being a 3. I don’t remember the last time that happened. I need to be patient and just keep taking a step at a time. I’ve started. I will finish. Little by little, I will travel far.

One experiment I’ve been trying lately in the conversations I have online is trying to clearly point out to someone when I am agreeing with them.

What I’ve learned from this is that there’s a startling number of people who get uneasy when they realize I’m making the same point they are, and they go out of their way to try to maintain the divide. They perform mental gymnastics because they aren’t looking for a conversation.

They’re looking for an argument.

I’m not their conversation partner. I’m their target. They don’t care what I think. They’re only interested in getting me worked up and aggravated, so they continuously leapfrog from one point to another, to the point of contradicting themselves.

It’s insulting and demeaning. It betrays the very nature of conversation because it turns what is supposed to be selfless communication and understanding between two individuals into a totally selfish endeavor that only one person gets anything out of, and it’s something not even worth pursuing.

All that being said, this is not predominant, but it does happen more than it used to, and I’ve taken note of it.

In the Orchard

  • Artist: Edmund C. Tarbell (American, 1862–1938)
  • Date: 1891
  • Medium: Oil on canvas
  • Collection: Terra Foundation for American Art, Chicago, IL, United States

Description

In the Orchard by Edmund C. Tarbell depicts a group of four women and one man conversing in a bucolic setting on a summer’s afternoon. The figures have been identified as the artist’s sister-in-law, Lydia, standing at left and shown again, seated and with her back to the viewer, on the right; Lemira Eastman, a family friend, in dark blue; Richmond Souther, leaning over the back of the red bench; and Emeline Souther Tarbell, the artist’s wife, wearing a black hat and looking directly at the viewer. Poses and glances tie the five together in an intimate, convivial circle in the beneficent dappled sunlight of the orchard, which stretches away to a white fence in the distance. The work’s informal, contemporary subject, outdoor setting, and bright colors in distinct, rapidly applied paint strokes are hallmarks of the movement known as impressionism, which Americans such as Tarbell emulated from contemporary French artists.

Sometimes I think I could scream help me at someone and they still wouldn’t care. They would still just go back to what they were doing and ignore it like everything else.

You guys should try ground talks.

Quand tu es par terre, de préférence dans l'herbe, et que tu parles de tout et de rien avec ta meilleure copine.

Seeing nothing but the sky.

Peut-être quelques oiseaux.

Hearing nothing but a conversation.

Ou peut-être quelques bruits sans importance.

“i love you. i would die for you. i would give my life for you. that’s how much I love you”

“but darling, dying is easy. it’s one single act of foolish courage. your death would not bring me any kind of happiness, i want you to live for me. i want you to dredge up the strength to do more than just survive. make a life for yourself, and enjoy it. do That for me”

A Salon

A pleasant early spring morning. Sunlight sprawls across the landscape and birdsong brightens the day. In the shadiest corners of the field thin snow drifts remain.

Saturday evening found us in Providence as we joined extended family to view a gallery where one family member had splendid work in a group show. Then it was off to a food court where everyone dined on a wide range of interesting…
