I’ve been waiting 8 months for an Italian visa. Not since the [Ancient] Roman times has any Italian government made as much trouble for those arriving as the R. I., that is, the Repubblica Italiana. Back in 1940, the Italian consulate in Belgrade gave me a visa within a couple minutes, even though I had already been a refugee on the run from the Gestapo, with no particular travel destination.
I’m no Methuselah, and yet I remember perfectly well the times when passports and visas were only used on the borders of Tsarist Russia and Abdul-Hamid’s Turkey. Whoever succesfully crossed those two borders, could go on wherever they wished, to the ends of the world, even to Patagonia itself*, without owning any papers whatsoever. Whoever’s had enough of their home, would simply change their country and - if they wanted to - their name. The younger [generation] finds it hard to believe. And yet the author of these words has personally crossed dozens of borders, perfectly openly and legally so, without ever getting out of his train, without waiting a single night, without paying a single penny to the people smugglers. That last profession prospered only in Suwałki and between Mysłowice and Radziwiłłów**. In other lands it used to be completely unknown.
*Borderland of Argentina and Chile, in Polish often used to refer generically to a far-away, utterly alien land (translator’s (ie. my) note).
