Join me tonight Tuesday, October 28th, at 6pm PDT, as I share how to make your readers feel everything you are writing and to remember it. The entire meeting will last, depending upon questions, till 7:15pm PDT

Here’s a little bit about me:
Beth A. Freely is an award-winning author who has been spinning stories since childhood. She’s written more than 15 novels and novellas (with plenty more to come!), blending her love of history, culture, and adventure into every page. Her historical romance Love Of A Samurai hit #13 on the Best Seller list for Japanese Historical Fiction and soared to #1 in New Releases within days of release.

When she’s not writing, Beth can be found co-hosting The Book Crew podcast, trading witty banter as a BookFest Bellwether, or at home in the tiny village of Hope, New Mexico (“Population: 113, if you count the cats”) with her furry co-authors.

Starting a reading challenge with my 10 yr old.

Good afternoon book nerds.

So over the weekend as I was enjoying some reading time my 10 yr old says mom can I sit with you and read. Now of course I’m gonna say yes. But there’s a back story. She had speech difficulties as a baby which in turn lead to find out she has a learning disability. Its not severe by any means it’s just that it takes her a little longer to understand and catch on to…

A new review is live on my blog, penguins!

Rating: 4/5 Penguins

Quick Reasons: yet another awesome take on the robot (and zombie!) apocalypse; I LOVE the examination of what it means to be “human” that goes on throughout this read; the robots I expected, the zombies took me by surprise; a few delicious “twists” I didn’t see coming, a few delicious twists I guessed pretty early on; this was a quick, entertaining read

Hello All,

recently i won a giveaway hosted by the Author H. Lovelyn Bettison, the giveaway was for her favorite 5 Haruki Murakami Books. Well of course i could not resist entering, even thought I normally am not lucky enough to win giveaways I guess that luck was with me because i got the email from her.

when I received the box, she was lovely enough to also include one of her books. Obviously from the title of this post you can tell what the title is. I started it that same day and fell in love with it. On the cover it says “IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO CHANGE”. wow that alone made me wonder what the story was going to be about. Below are the actual scan of the book, and also the note what she included.

On Goodreads I gave this book 5 stars. the writing was great, the story flowed well, and without giving any spoilers, there was a happy ending.

My review from goodreads:

The story of learning to accept the loss of a mother, a wife a husband, and finding a way to move on.. This story was beautifully written. I won a giveaway from the author and she included in the package a copy of this book, what I loved most was that she hand wrote little notes throughout the book about things happening and what inspired it. Or why she wrote it in the story.. It made it more personal for me and helped me understand the story a lot better. It is definitely a book I will be recommending.

So if you are looking for a great summer read, which is light and fun, but speaks about issues that we deal with in our lives without being too serious, then this is the book for you. Please read and let me know what you think in the comments.

As always until next time remember Reading is Sexy!!

MELLI

Book Talk #4

Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson

Hello! Happy New Year! As you can probably tell by the date that I posted this, it’s my first ever book talk for 2016.

This book was actually given to me by one of my friends for my 18th birthday last year. For the holidays I went overseas so I decided to bring this book to keep me company. And let me tell you, this book is the perfect read to start the year.

So a recap, this story is basically about a girl named Taylor and she spends summer with her family at their summer house and the reason why they’re all together is because her dad is sick and this trip is like their last vacation as a whole family together. They haven’t been back for 5 years in that house and people from Taylor’s past show up again in her life and apparently the last time they all saw each other, they weren’t on good terms. This summer trip is becoming really difficult for her as she tries to handle people from her past and at the same time cope up with her dad’s sickness.

“A thousand moments that I had just taken for granted - mostly because I had assumed that there would be a thousand more.”

When I read this line and when I somehow got the gist of the story, it kind of reminded me of Nicholas Spark’s “The Last Song” because of the father-daughter relationship. Taylor, didn’t have problems with her dad, it’s just that she’s having a difficult time facing reality. I mean she is going to have to accept that one day, things are going to be different. In the story she’s really close with her dad and she simply can’t imagine a life without him. That scares her. It makes her suddenly do things that end up hurting other people. She tends to push away people thinking that she’ll handle this on her own. The more she runs away from her problems, it’ll probably hide and never show up again.

To me, personally, this book gave me a lot of lessons, lessons that I am definitely going to keep in mind as I start the year.

I’ve always had a challenging relationship with my dad. That’s why I guess I’ve always had a soft spot whenever I would read stories or watch movies about those kinds of relationship between a dad and his daughter. Maybe a part of me is jealous because those fun moments that happen never occur to me. What I’m grateful for about my dad is that he always believes in me. He’s not that affectionate but I can always get that 100% support from him no matter what. It’s probably the problems that I have with him are making me somewhat distant to him and to everyone else. Which now I know I shouldn’t do.

I don’t know what will happen this year or the next. A lot can change and I don’t know if I’m prepared.

“It seemed crazy, that something so big, so seemingly permanent, could be knocked down by a little wind and rain.”

I don’t know anything, what’s about to come, what I should do. My relationship with my family will I know for sure, change. Am I ready for that change? This book taught me how I should stop living my life as a worried teenager. It’s going to be scary but at the end of the day, you can do it. I can do it. Our family, our moms and our dads, they’re always there, no matter what you go through, no matter how many problems appear in front of you. You take charge of your own life. Go grab those opportunities to become a better person. Learn how to open up to people and at the same time be careful of your heart.

Ask an Author: What book would you give to trick-or-treaters, and why? PART TWO

In this second installment of “Ask an Author: Halloween edition,” check out what books Brad Thor, Caroline Kepnes, and Hannah McKinnon would hand out to trick-or-treaters. And be sure to come back tomorrow for part three! Brad Thor: THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW – One of my all-time favorites.  I have been fascinated by this classic tale ever since I was a little boy.  I still enjoy reading it…
