I found this song about 5 years ago and hadn’t heard it before. It immediately appealed to me and I fell in love with it. When I looked at the details I thought, well, ain’t you just Mr Fucking Predictable. It’s from 2000. My teenage years where the music you absorb during that time ends up becoming the soundtrack of your life. So of course, hearing a “new” track 5 years ago from that era, my brain just went oh this track fucking rocks. And I am still to this day debating with myself if I like this song cause it’s an absolute banger or if I like this song cause it’s drenched in my era.
The chorus is powerful, just oozing in early noughties stadium guitars and the singing just belting out, if you ever to leave, leave yourself outside the door. I thought this was originally an aloof 2000s breakup attitude but when I finally heard the second line, if you ever to leave this perfect world and then barely whispered Lord. I figured oh fuck. This is a begging call to whoever to just hold on a little longer. It gets better. Just hold on. You fuck.
The slow build start to huge stadium guitar chorus and back to those gentle naked guitars one more time before a final climb to a layered chorus close where every single instrument is fighting to lead and the singer is giving it his all just to be drowned out by the sheer volume of everything around him. Maybe there is something in that sound design. I’m begging you to hold on but I don’t even know if you can hear me through all the noise that keeps on crashing through.

i know my mother better than anyone else does because of what she’s done to me. i almost wish i could unlearn it but the reality of understanding your abuser is so much more mundane and pathetic than anyone can realize. because, at the end of the day, enacting abuse onto another person is itself mundane and pathetic. what it’s taught me is that abusers aren’t monsters, they’re people; often pathetic ones, lashing out and vying for power and control in a world that vehemently denies them because they cannot accept that reality. that they cannot have anything more than the illusion of control, because the universe is a cold chaos that does not consider them.
they often don’t understand that they’re just another predictable chain of events that occurs when someone has to grapple with the inherent psychosis that comes with realizing how little control over anything you actually have.
in the grand scheme of things, an abuser is just another worm, writhing in dirt and struggling to make sense of it all, fighting for as much power and control as it can have, and either not realizing (or caring) that they are a worm, just like the rest of us in the unending mass of the universe. that the universe is callous and doesn’t care what they want. that they scream, beg and die like everyone else does, and there’s no dignity in any of it. some of them know this, and abuse people because they understand these facts, but it’s not the same for the vast majority of abusers.
abuse is human culture. human nature, even, in many circumstances. a natural reaction to experiencing abuse and suffering itself. and it’s for that reason that abuse is just… mundane, and pathetic.
