La gran historia de Area 88 nace en las manos del mangaka Kaoru Shintani en el año 1979, y se publica en las paginas de la editorial Shogakukan en 23 volúmenes finalizando en el año 1986. Para este época ya el manga había tomado fuerza en todos los lectores des país nipon, por lo que para el año 1985 se adapta su historia en formato Ova de 3 episodios, que fueron producidos por Studios Pierrot. Esta Ova se lleva a cabo entre finales de 1970 a principios de 1980 y se encuentra en gran parte en una guerra en el medio oriente, en un país llamado el Reino de Arslan. La guerra utiliza mercenarios pilotos de combate, con su sede en un secreto del desierto base aérea llamada Zona 88.
