Brugmansia; Angel’s Trumpet, Trompeta de Angel.
This plant started flowering in late December and is still going strong. It is sited in the back part of the garden and we’ve been enjoying its heady fragrance wafting across the garden and into the house most evenings.
I bought the plant two years ago from a private grower and kept it in a container for a year until the garden was ready to be planted last February (pic 6). Our neighbor’s tall ficus trees provided enough shade for it to be happy and with plenty of water it quickly grew lush and full (pic 7, July) so now the tallest stem is about 3m/9ft and its width is greater. Tropical storms and hurricanes last fall shredded and tore many of its leaves. That was expected but what was not anticipated was losing all of its lower and interior leaves, leaving it a gawky, lanky, and oddly shaped plant. The plus side is having room below for bringing in new plants.
White is the most common color here. Pink is sometimes encountered and there are a couple of yellow ones too. The pink plants in pics 8,9 were in nearby gardens but have been removed by their owners and I regret not taking cuttings earlier. Speaking of cuttings I’ve been unsuccessful with softwood ones so I will try using woody stems now that there are plenty. It has been two years since it last flowered so I’ll wait until it’s finished before taking them.
