i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.

in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.

But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.

our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.

anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.

And, to go a lil deeper here, we literally just came off a comic where Jason said he was going to stop letting his trauma define him. The ending of RHvJ was a mess, but the general sentiment was that Jason was going to try and move on. He’s tired of being in this cycle of trauma and abuse. He’s ready.

And while I have my issues with that - nominally, it’s rly fucking convenient how this sounds like a “forgive and move on” sermon from my church days that omits Bruce’s role in how Jason ended up where he did (and the core reason why he was mad in the first place) - I can be satisfied with that ending.

Yeah, I’m tired of every third comic featuring Jason having to do with the Joker. He’s in his early 20’s (yes, early 20’s: whatever nonsense retconning went into the Bats’ ages for n52 was undone by Rebirth). So much of his life has been one battle after another. I’d have loved a comic where he went soul searching, but this could be good.

I mean, this guy is literally being the hero who could’ve saved him. How’s that for soothing/healing his trauma?! And shit, there’s some built in conflict right now - someone can easily call him out for wanting to protect these kids for his own gain, rather than theirs.

I LOVE LIBRARIES!!

My library does “stuffed animal sleepovers” where kids leave their stuffed animals at the library overnight. Then the staff lets teenagers in after-hours to arrange the stuffed animals into fun scenes and take a bunch of pictures for the library’s social media. And then the little kids come back the next day and get to see all the pictures of their stuffed animals reading, playing games, riding around the library on book carts, etc 🥹

That is so exceptionally beautiful and wholesome I actually cried reading that.

i will never understand why some people want to do away with libraries

above all else libraries are community centers, a place where children can come together and socialize outside of the unnecessary structure of school, some of my fondest memories from childhood are from the weekly activities at my local library where i learned things new things, and made friends i never would have if not for the library

librarians are some of the kindest and seemingly some of the most fulfilled people ive ever met they are masters at getting you whatever information you need and they are some of the most important people your community has

Frothing at the mouth every time I see a sex ed resource that says “use condoms” without any further elaboration. “Condoms prevent STIs and pregnancy in the vast majority of cases when used correctly” but then they don’t talk about what correctly IS

Correct use of a condom means

• Using the right size, because if it’s too big it can slide off or leak and if it’s too small it can break or come off. Condoms usually come in 5 sizes, I’m sure you could find others outside of that as well but in ten years of sex work I found they covered everyone
• Using lube, even if you think you don’t need it. With the exception of oral sex, condoms should always be used with lube, 100% of the time. Most important lube should be applied to the outside but a drop in the tip of the condom before putting it in is also a good idea
• Being mindful that latex is prone to wearing out, being damaged by heat etc. Condoms should be kept somewhere cool, not folded in wallets or sat on in back pockets and should be changed between activities and after about 15 minutes of any vigorous activity. Ask me how I know (a condom snapped on my leg when a client was pulling out, because I didn’t change it when I should have)
• The penetrative partner should hold the base of the condom when they pull out, and should do so immediately after they ejaculate so the condom doesn’t leak or come off as the penis gets flaccid

Bonus: a lot of people think hand stuff can’t transmit STIs. Wrong! If you give your partner a handjob and then touch yourself you can get HPV, herpes (low risk), and infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea

This isn’t meant to be stressful, and the most common STIs are the most treatable - and often curable - but getting gonorrhea in your eyes after a facial still extremely sucks and yet no one talks about the fact that any mucous membrane can be effected, not just your genitals (yes this includes your mouth and throat)

In ten years of doing sex work where I saw 10 clients a day most of the time I’ve had 4 condom fails ever. One was what I mentioned above when it snapped on my leg, one was a client on top of me didn’t get off fast enough after he finished and the condom came off, and the other two were a Glyde brand magnum that was inexplicably twice the thickness of a regular condom and didn’t stay put on anyone so I suggest just avoiding Glyde entirely (their water based lubes also stain fyi). With all other brands correct use = extremely safe

Oil-based lube and latex condoms are also incompatible! Condoms can and should be used on toys.

I’d normally tag nsfw but I never got sex ed in school or at home. Even if you yourself don’t need to use this information, it’s still good in general to know, whether that be for fiction writing or advice to a friend or just to have in your back pocket (which is apparently hopefully not where you’re keeping the condoms). the people who deliberately misunderstand youth liberation really piss me off as an adult who was once a kid who wanted to run away and, while literally running away from home, realized they had nowhere else to go but back home. nowhere. no where! the only place i could go was back home to my abusive parents. youth liberation is creating a society wherein i, as a child, would have had a safe place to go that was not my home, where i could prioritize my and my brother’s safety.

youth liberation is what helps children get the medical support they need, even if their parents are neglectful.

youth liberation educates the child so that the child has the necessary language to speak on their own behalf, as an agent of themselves with autonomy over themselves.

youth liberation demands we treat all children as what they are: future adults, who at all times have the right to autonomy over their body, and a right to a life free from abuse and exploitation. it would deny parents the ability to force (in the case of intersex “correction” surgeries) or deny medical care, deny them the ability to isolate and control their children through regulated forms of education like in homeschooling, and would instead give that power to the child and the child alone.

youth liberation is not only about preventing abuse before it happens, by demanding that children are treated with respect and as full agents over themselves, it is also about creating a supportive society that allows children to escape abusive situations to a community-based safe space.

everyone trying to argue youth lib is about “letting pedophiles hang out with children” are not only engaging in some of the most deliberate bad faith possible, they’re purposefully ignoring the fact youth liberation would also protect and prevent child sexual abuse, which relies upon children being - to a certain extent - trapped, with no ability to leave the situation they’re in themselves, at the hands of statistically family members, relatives, family friends, known babysitters, etc. children can only be trapped if they have nowhere else to go.

csa also relies on poor sex education - in fact, every single assault i faced was due to me not having been taught that what i experienced was assault at all. i was raised in an abusive home, and i came to earnestly believe that a relationship with a man necessitated my allowing him to use my body however he wanted, because that’s what i saw growing up. my parents were poor educators, only giving us books they purchased about sex education for kids for us to read alone.

youth liberation is necessary, and any who tries to paint youth lib as evil, as a “pedophile” movement, is choosing to view the collective desire of abused kids and former kids who were abused - their desire for a better world where their abuse wouldn’t have happened - as something destructive and negative and that’s just disgusting to me. youth liberation now.
