Testing out slit and drift to make a 12mm square hole in a 12mm square bar the first couple of attempts my chisel was too big for the slot so the drift didn’t pull all the metal back in used smaller and smaller chisels from left to right then the fourth at the top is as perfect as I think I can get it..
Making a door latch to match a new cast iron replica that had snapped. The middle and endpoints of the latch are made from 3 mm sheet drilled and filed out to fit the keeper and the latch lock part if that’s what it’s called. These were cold riveted from the back as they will be against the door and frame. The handle end is 4 pieces. I used a small ring to make the raised part of the backplate. The main latch has a square hole punched and an offset . The centre ping is from 16mm square with a tenon formed which is about 3mm of square tenon to match the square hole in the latch then rounded up to go through the hole in the backplate.

I always struggled to cut these forklift tines and had them lying around for ages dreading the moment when I needed to cut them up. I recently cut out 3 blocks and it took me a couple of hours with the big angle grinder which you can imagine sprays sparks and dust all over the place. So very grateful for this solution. It is a tray with water soluble utting fluid and a small 12v pump and some tubing with a tap so I can regulate the flow.

Wrestling with a handrail and clamps in the vice to bash over the tenon heads . It takes quite a bit of jiggery-pokery to get these all lined up ready for riveting. I’m aslo thinking to collar the scrolls just to add a bit of extra security but these things all take time.
Monkeying around…..the monkey tool squares up the end of the tenons, much easier than using a file
After splitting curling up the ends of some toolbox hinges. Next I need to forge weld these up so it means digging out the coal forge for it’s maiden voyage and setting it up outside as I don’t have a chimney stack or space for one for that matter. Next on the list is to make the box from recycled pallet wood.

Put together with some flatbar, angle iron and sheet metal to make a vertical stand for my bandsaw it is a bit fiddly getting it all in place for the bandsaw spacing before some tack welding and swearing …
