Her Time _ She has been feeling it for a while now - that sense of awakening. There is a gentle rage simmering inside of her, and it is getting stronger by the day. She will hold it close to her - she will nurture it and let it grow. She won’t let anyone take it away from her. It is her rocket fuel and finally, she is going places. She can feel it down to her very core - this is her time. She will not only climb mountains - she will move them too. Africa Sept // 2016

The Shepherd // Africa

High in the mountains of Southern Ethiopia, a shepherd tends to his livestock after surviving the worst drought in 50 years. At 93 years of age, he graciously shared stories of determination and perseverance - Ethiopia is such an incredible place, every single person I met proved that so much can be done even with very little.  #humble #humanity #positive #life #reportage #documentary #beauty #poetic #allheart

“Celebrations in the Omo”

Humbled to shoot a traditional bull jumping ceremony ‘Ukuli Bula’, restricted to an area deep in the south of Ethiopia. One of the most dramatic and significant rites of passage, celebrated over a 3 day period. The women are repeatedly whipped by the men, difficult to witness, hear, smell and see. The whipping signifies the women’s strength, bravery and loyalty to the boy jumping. The scars are considered to be a mark of beauty and courage. #lifeinomo

A portrait of a young stick fighter in the Omo Valley Ethiopia. A tradition rich in culture yet utterly brutal.. often causing significant injuries to these young men. Loss of limbs, blindness and death. The ceremony is also known as “Donga” it is a symbol of prestige, its a test of nerves and brutal strength. The “Donga” is fought to prove masculinity, settle personal vendettas and most importantly to win wives.

I met this lady the day our car broke down, deep in the south of Ethiopia.

No words were exchanged just an intriguing curiosity, and silence, lots of silence.  Two women, two completely different worlds, but somehow our paths were meant to cross that day.

Omo Africa

A beautiful intriguing moment deep in the Omo Valley, Southern Ethiopia. Humbled to meet these gracious tribal women. Scarification still remains rife today amongst these tribes. The more scars, the stronger, braver and more beautiful these women are considered to be. The scars are used to mark stages in a young girls life, her transformation from childhood to adulthood.

‘Isla and her newborn sister’ Fortunately both her mother and newborn sibling were blessed to have survived childbirth in such an isolated village in southern Ethiopia. Just how lucky we are becomes apparent when you consider the plight of Ethiopian women, where labour becomes a risky game of chance between severe infection and death. Standing up for African mothers.

The Omotic tribe of Karo in southern Ethiopia is rich in culture and tradition. Specific rituals occur regularly within the tribal communities, and sometimes neighbouring villagers will travel all night to witness these rites of passage and participate in the celebrations.

Beautiful to see these African kids just being kids. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen enough here. Last shoot of the day in one of the poorest locations in Kenya. Predominately an all women’s tribe. Strong and equally as spirited. You need to be, to survive.
