An FYI before you follow me:
I view my version of Calebmc as childhood friends with Calebās attachment and love being based off lesbian experiences. Caleb himself is a butch lesbian in my canon.
I may occasionally use āgegeā as an affectionate term but itās important to me that Caleb and my mc are not related to each other or adopted siblings.

Eng loc or cn version, either way I donāt think Caleb ever saw Josephine as āfamilyā. Thatās his abuser and the abuser of the one he loved and I feel like Caleb, for the majority of his life, put up a front to establish some form of normalcy for mc at the cost of his true feelings for herāeither way he knew people would view their dynamic as āfamilialā because of their relationship, and I think Caleb wouldāve preferred normalcy for mc because she doesnāt remember their abuse, he does.
When Josephine died and he ādiedā too I think he could finally feel free to pursue what he wanted all this time, that being mc, but it was weird to him because he spent so much of his life being her protector. Now sheās grown up and thinks she doesnāt need him and heās confusedāesp with that chip in his brain. I think no matter what interpretation you have of their relationship, both Caleb and mc want to move forward past that and make something new.
Just my POV š donāt attack me but I feel like a lot of people forget Caleb, mc, and all the lis suffered such extreme abuse under EVER which mc doesnāt remember, but THEY do. The fact that Josephine tried to remove herself and 2 kids under her watch from that situation will not erase the violence she inflicted on them/had them inflict on each other and Caleb knows that.
Dude I wrote this while I was on a grocery trip LMFAO so itās so badly worded but I canāt stop thinking about it šš Caleb who failed his psychological exam when joining the military and has been experimented on at 2 points in his life so people take advantage of his powers. His only wish is to come home to mc and protect her from what he has endured and he would rather live a lifetime of suffering and misery, whether thatās sacrificing his body to experimentation if it meant mc didnāt have to, or being to be someone to her whether thatās her friend or family but not her loverā¦

With the release of Crease I think it kind of cements my theory that Caleb would rather put distance between his old life and his current one (post-boom) because in the time he has left (he knows itās limited) heād rather spend it as mcās boyfriend than as the figure heād been seen as for the majority of her life whether thatās her friend or her familyā¦
Like he was such a popular guy at DAA. People mourn him every day, Gideon is implied to have visited his grave multiple times. š that speaks a lot for their friendship. Gideon must have loved Caleb so much and even their bond had to be dissipated because Caleb knows he doesnāt have much time left (or is worried heāll never come home) and Caleb would rather spend all that time with his Mc over anyone elseāGideon is a part of his old life and must have viewed Mc as Calebās family instead of someone he can love properly.
Caleb giving up everything that was his former life to the point where heās shocked his old clothes still fit over his armā¦he has my entire heart and soul.
