Spellbound is the third and final solo studio album by American jazz fusion bassist Alphonso Johnson, released in July 1977 through Epic Records. Following his departure from the legendary fusion group Weather Report, the album marked a shift toward a more cohesive, progressive jazz-rock “song cycle” compared to his previous diverse works.
Personnel:
Backing Vocals – Bayeté , Michaela Carey
Percussion – David Igelfeld
Guitar – Kevin Shireve
Guitar – Pat Thrall
Piano, Synthesizer – Clyde Criner
Bass – Alphonso Johnson
Reception
The AllMusic review by rated the album 2 and half stars and stated:”The record is a great showcase for Johnson’s bass playing, alternating between soloing , lead bass , and supporting duties. The band delivers a very solid performance, though they never get as much spotlight. … Actually, the whole album works as a suite, and while it is not a must-have, it certainly shows ambition and originality.”
