The SS Empire #Windrush arrived at Tilbury docks in 1948 carrying passengers from the #Caribbean. Invited by Britain to assist with post-war reconstruction, many of this generation resided in #Brent, becoming part of the fabric of the borough with a lasting legacy.

This #WindrushDay take the opportunity to explore some fantastic @brentmuseumandarchives e-collections of widely varying recommended reads as we honour the British Caribbean community and the half a million people who travelled to the UK after the Second World War.

Explore the BTCOTC exhibition to learn more about Brents Windrush communities - link in bio.

#WindrushDay coming to help build the uk up after war most of the black women in pictures you see worked for the NHS and ironically it was the NHS who killed my mum (rogue doctor) and now we get told to go back to where you come from “monkey” the mentality that’s still alive today.
.
.
Here’s a true story what happened recently….. once upon a time someone said “why would they put a monkey on the front cover of a magazine “ the end . They came for a new and better life to a place they were promised was the land of milk and honey and now they have to fight for the right to live in the only place they know as home .its still alive today they want us out even people like me who were born here …. .
Was the invitation to join a new form of slavery?? It’s windrush day and I mean day just like black history month it will be put back in a box for another year before it gets dusted off and paraded next year … sounds familiar that’s what they used to do to slaves at slave markets parade them …. I know this won’t affect most people so do what people do ignore it because it doesn’t affect your life but for others.
.
Happy windrush day but I’m not sure happy is the appropriate word . You have to have lived it or affected by it to understand .

Windrush Day

On the third official Windrush Day, we recognise the half a million people who travelled to the UK after World War II, and celebrate the contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants to our communities here in the UK.

Our ‘Nice Cup of Tea?’ display is a collaboration with members of Oxford’s African Caribbean and Windrush communities, highlighting hidden stories of empire and slavery behind the tea trade. You can see it on display in Gallery 40.

Featured works: ‘God Save the Queen’ and 'Windrush Scandal’ by @thehoneyeffect .
.
.
.

72 years ago the HMT Empire Windrush arrived by Tilbury Docks carrying workers from the Caribbean who were invited as BRITISH subjects to help rebuild Britain post WW2. Upon arrival they were met with hostility, and that hostile continued for many of them facing racism and discrimination, and being denied rights.

Nowadays it’s hard to mention the name Windrush without it preceding the word ‘scandal’. It’s painful to think of all those who have suffered in the hands of the British government, with some losing their livelihoods, being taken from everyone they knew and deported to places they were not familiar with. For some of the victims, the stress of this caused health problems which led to the loss of life. A compensation fund has been created but a tiny percentage has been paid. Many still await justice. The artworks featured in the post are by @thehoneyeffect and illustrate some of the struggles that the Windrush generation and the generations after them have had to endure throughout the decades. These works were originally commissioned by @leftlionmagazine for their Windrush special 2 years ago, and the first one is featured on the front cover of Journeys to Nottingham by @nottinghamblackarchive that features a collections of narratives and photographs from people who travelled from the Caribbean to Nottingham during the Windrush era. Copies were being sold at @new_art_exchange. I will place a link in my bio to the drama ‘Sitting in Limbo’ which premiered on the BBC a few weeks ago about one of the victims of the scandal. I’ll also include the link to Nottingham Black Archive’s website and @thehoneyeffect’s Etsy store where you can purchase prints of the work featured in this post. #windrushgeneration #windrushday2020 #blackbritain #blackwomenartists (at Nottingham, United Kingdom)

Thank you for taking part and taking the time to learn @girl_run_the_shire 💕

This morning on my run I paused my watch at 2.22 miles to join my friends over at @blackgirlsdorunuk to think about Windrush. Ashamed to say up until recently I didn’t know much about what happened, because it didn’t affect me - this is my privilege. I am now trying to do better and to learn. If you weren’t aware, today marks 72 years since the ship Empire Windrush’ brought one of the first large groups of Caribbean people to the UK in 1948, and as, at the time, the Caribbean was part of the commonwealth those people were automatically British subjects and free to permanently live and work in the UK. In 2017 after it emerged that hundreds of Commonwealth citizens, many of whom were from the ‘Windrush’ generation, had been wrongly detained, deported and denied legal rights. Years later many are still fighting for justice. I’m not an expert on this subject at all and I’m only just learning about how deeply flawed and discriminatory so many of our systems are, especially the immigration system - I urge you to keep learning.
.
Thank you to the ladies over at @blackgirlsdorunuk for bringing this to my attention, today and always I’ll stand (and run ❤️) with you.

windrush Day .

My mum was a nurse and she helped rebuild this country (United Kingdom) This was her picture in her passport which we still have it’s stamped indefinite leave, she was smart and got her british passport soon after .
But indefinite leave means indefinite leave …. im not saying those who didn’t are silly but they were promised a new life and helped build that dream and are now being victimised….. people say they should be grateful because of Churchill he “allowed” them to be able to settle in Europe …. now years after here’s the question what should be asked … should they be grateful for the lies? The betrayal from the mothership….
