Look back month challenge 2026
Day 8: Tranquil
I just barely caught the last of the sunset. It was a warm day and much of the remaining snow melted. Warmer, quiet, with a nifty sunset. Mmm. Tranquil.
Meet Zeke! He is a Goodreau Upside Down Oz vinyl bjd. He is “Scatter” the scarecrow.
He’s wearing some Tonner clothes from a franchise that shall not be named. I wanted to get a shot with the sunset and I saw that he had his hoodie on, so I gave him a scarf and took him out on the porch!
Zeke was an unexpected gift. He was my only MSD-sized boy for a long time.
Back in the days of the Goodreau BJD Yahoogroup, Paulette was always having a contest or challenge or give away or something. She is a big fan of the DIY aspects of the hobby, and cheerfully encouraged others to customize their dolls.
Since one of the things that holds people back is the fear of ruining an expensive doll, she made us an offer!
It went something like this: “Hey there, I found a box of dolls from the Oz series, and they are the ones that we can’t sell. Our first batch from the factory had misshapen joints, because they pulled the vinyl out of the molds too soon and the shoes collapsed a little bit. They are strung and will hold some poses but they don’t stand on their own. Would anyone like one of these dolls to use for practicing face ups, body modifications or other art work?”
I emailed her directly and asked if I could have one of the boys.
What I was not prepared for was to get a complete, full-set Scatter the Scarecrow doll complete with box!
And while his joints are a little funny, that actually kind of works for a scarecrow. I did update his face up, and have him green eyes and freckles. He usually wears a red or auburn wig but I was racing the sunset, so he’s wearing a black one here.

Yeah, they make the Tranquils do menial labor, but from an economic standpoint, it makes sense to teach them the skills they need to generate profit for the Circle. After all, those Tranquils, mages, and Templars have to feed themselves.
From an economic standpoint, it also makes sense to have those Tranquils start generating profit as soon as possible, so why not have all apprentices learn the basics of the Tranquils’ craft?
Imagine being a child trying to memorize how to process pure lyrium ore for potions and enchantments, knowing you might need this knowledge if your teachers and jailers decide to take away your feelings and dreams one day.
Imagine knowing that Tranquils capable of skilled labor are generally treated better than those who can only mop floors. Now, imagine looking at the Tranquil who changes your bedsheets and trying to compare yourself to them.
They’re only a couple years older than you. Were they as dumb as you feel when trying to memorize all the ingredients for the vitality potion? Did they anger one of your teachers? Did they talk back to a Templar? What makes you different from them? What makes you better?
