Shit. “Y—yes, mom.”

Not a review. Something worse.
[[MORE]]Between Two Fires by Christopher Beuhlman was independently published in 2012. There was also a hardcover run from Ace. In the nearly 15 years since, Between Two Fires grew in popularity with horror and dark fantasy readers.
I’ve been wanting to read Between Two Fires for a while. Goodreads says I added it to my TBR in 2020. I’d heard good things about it, especially on Reddit (take that as you will lol). Like many books I want to read, it was a long time before I got serious about actually wanting to pick it up.
I get some Barnes money for Christmas, and I decide, now’s the time. Let’s pick up a copy of Between Two Fires. And what do I find? It’s out of stock at all the stores in my area.
And online.
And at other retailers. Other, used book-specific retailers.
Where the hell is this book?
I do some googling, and do you know what I discover? Between Two Fires is currently out of print, because Nightfire is republishing it in March.
Okay, that’s fine, I think. I like Nightfire for the most part, and March isn’t a long wait. I’ll grab a copy when it comes out.
EXCEPT.
Between Two Fires is getting published as a deluxe hardcover edition. That’s it. No details about a future paperback release. You want this book? You gotta pay 30 bucks for some stupid sprayed edges.
To make matters worse, people who have copies of the indie pubbed paperback are selling them at insane, “I know what I’ve got” prices online.
I do not like this whole “deluxe hardcover” trend that’s been going on for several years now. It feels like a not-so-sneaky way to raise the prices of books, especially when you can’t buy a non-deluxe version of a release.
And to do that to Between Two Fires specifically??? This doesn’t seem like a book whose target readership would give a shit about sprayed edges and special endpapers. But then I saw the copy for the Nightfire edition that describes this book as “the unmissable BookTok sensation.”
Ew. But it makes sense now, I guess. It’s all marketing and money making. I just wish I could get my hands on a regular paperback. Maybe one day Nightfire will release one. But I’ll be scouring my local used bookstores in the meantime.
I’m just gonna say: download TOR. Keep a copy in multiple places. It’s slower but if you need the privacy then it can’t really be beat.
Realistically using a VPN is enough and could be better if you need to use some program that doesn’t work in the browser but for any sort of browsing the web that your government may deem illegal TOR will be there
There’s kinda a “ooh dark web scary” factor to it sure but it can be used just like any other web browser just with multiple encrypted hops through the network similar to a VPN but more. There are also TOR hidden services which are the “scary” deep web but it’s not hard to not end up on those (in fact it takes more effort to end up on those)
Also obligatory nerd shit about surface web vs dark web vs deep web: the dark web isn’t actually scary at all it’s just stuff that hasn’t been web scraped and shows up in search results. Any time you look at a page you need to log in for (bank account info, editing a profile on something, even just looking at email) or when you are looking at something that is generated as you go (YouTube recommendations, tumblr timeline (even logged out)) then you are on the dark web. The deep web is stuff where the servers are obscured (like TOR hidden services) and those are the places more likely to have illegal stuff but that’s more from the fact of the privacy it affords than an inherent quality of it. Even on the deep web there are message boards and sites that are just the same as surface web stuff. Anyway rant over
LOL The cut scene for the dark knight has tor start in 1 armour set and end in ALTADOR ARMOUR SET???? so funny

Tor! Here are the model assets from the game! Arnt they so cool! Love when his beans are out
