Timur/Colovance
—
“I wish you didn’t have to go…”
Timur paused in his packing, smoothing out some nonexistent wrinkles in a shirt he’d just folded and placed into the suitcase that lay open on his little-used bed. He couldn’t look at Colovance or he would change his mind.
He would absolutely change his mind.
“I know. I wish I didn’t either, but this is a great opportunity. The advances they’re working on up there… it’s really astounding,” Timur said, carefully keeping his voice even. “I’ve even been promised a promotion.”
The younger tech managed a wan chuckle. “Doctor feels like a weird title for you. And I know it’ll be great, and you’ll be great, and I’m… I’m happy for you, truly, I just…” Colovance’s voice cracked a bit and he sniffled.
Timur glanced at Colovance out of the corner of his eye. He looked as miserable as Timur felt. He looked even smaller than usual now, his lean frame swallowed by one of Timur’s sweaters, hugging himself and looking a little lost, his cheeks wet and his eyes red.
Timur’s throat closed and he quickly looked back at the suitcase and the pile of items he was slowly placing into it, and he swallowed hard to get past the lump before he spoke.
“Maybe another transfer position will open up and you’ll come too?” Timur said.
“Yeah, maybe,” Colovance replied without enthusiasm.
They both knew it wouldn’t happen. Colovance had already been offered, and reluctantly accepted, Timur’s soon-to-be-vacant position of Senior Maintenance Engineer.
A hard rap came on the door frame and the Europa Expedition coordinator poked his head into the room, “You have five minutes! Shuttle leaves in fifteen, get moving!”
Timur shook himself and started cramming items into the suitcase, taking much less care than he had previously.
Colovance stood by, silent save for the sniffling, unable to bring himself to say anything further.
Too soon, Timur finished packing his suitcase. He closed it, then set it next to the pair of duffels already waiting in the corridor. The Europa Expedition coordinator waited impatiently nearby. If he’d been wearing a watch, he’d be staring at it pointedly. As it was, Timur was surprised he wasn’t tapping his foot.
Timur finally turned to Colovance.
“Hey,” he said softly. “Come here.”
Colovance wiped at his face and walked to Timur, and looked up at him. He didn’t bother trying to halt the tears.
Timur sighed and folded Colovance into his arms, tucking the younger tech under his chin. “Hey, it’s not forever,” he said, then pulled back and looked down at him.
“Promise?” Colovance asked.
Timur gently took Colovance’s face between his hands and bent his head, capturing Colovance’s lips in a kiss that betrayed the edge of desperation Timur was feeling. For a few precious seconds, nothing else existed as Timur poured himself into the kiss, as if he could simply physically leave his heart and soul where they belonged - in Colovance’s capable hands.
Timur broke the kiss slowly, reluctantly, but kept his face close, not shying away from the salt of Colovance’s tears.
“I promise,” Timur murmured. “We’ll be together again someday, you’ll see.”
“I’m holding you to that,” Colovance whispered, brokenly, but fiercely.
“I’d expect nothing less from my most stubborn, best beloved tech,” Timur said, his voice breaking slightly as he tripped over the word beloved.
The Expedition coordinator loudly cleared his throat and Timur kissed Colovance’s forehead. Colovance squeezed Timur as tight as he could, with a little grunt of effort, then let him step away.
Timur threw one duffel over his shoulder, then picked up the other, and his suitcase. He looked back over his shoulder at Colovance.
“Bye, sweetheart,” he whispered, then turned away before he could see Colovance’s face crumple and change his mind.
So… it ended up being too long for a Tumblr post so… ooops?

Summary:
Felwinter hates the way that Warmind facilities react to him. You’d think if all he is is programming, he would feel significantly less doubt.
Timur, known as Tamerlane, terrorized Asia in the 14th century. This Turkic warlord founded a vast empire but ruled through fear. His conquests shocked the world with savage brutality.
Timur rose as a Muslim chieftain in turbulent Central Asia after the Mongol Empire crumbled. He united fractured tribes through ruthless campaigns starting in 1370. His empire briefly dazzled with Samarkand’s splendor, but rested on fear alone.
Timur’s rampages killed millions and scarred regions from Delhi to Damascus. Surprise fact: He inspired both dread and awe—his descendants built cultural wonders like the Taj Mahal’s architects. Yet his rule showed conquest’s dark side: glory without stability, echoing Genghis Khan but ending in ruins.
