Movies I Saw in 2025 - The Wolf Man (1941)

#56

2025 = year of Wolf Man confirmed?

One of my many personal movie missions is to watch all the Universal Monster Movies, or at least the ones that got turned into characters in Horrified. This year, I knocked out the Wolf Man, which isn’t my favorite by any metric (I don’t think anything will be able to knock the Creature from his pedestal at this point), but is still a good time. I didn’t care much for Larry as a protagonist - hard for me to believe that “man who is pure of heart” thing when he’s established right out the gate as a creepy sex pest - but at least Lon Chaney Jr. is putting his whole heart and soul into the performance. It’s a fine monster movie, and that’s all I can say about it.

The Wolf Man

George Wagner

1941

When his brother dies, Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney) returns to Wales and reconciles with his father (Claude Rains). While there, he visits an antique shop and, hoping to impress Gwen (Evelyn Ankers), the attractive shopkeeper, buys a silver walking cane. That same night he kills a wolf with it, only to later learn that he actually killed a man (Bela Lugosi). A gypsy (Maria Ouspenskaya) explains that it was her son, a werewolf, that he killed, and that Larry is now one himself.

Yes, but what’s this pentagram business?
Every werewolf is marked with that, and sees it in the palm of his next victim’s hand.

[Image description: A digital drawing of Larry Talbot from the 1941 film The Wolf Man. He’s in his werewolf form, hunched over and prowling through the woods. His hands are splayed out - showing their sharpness - but facing inwards as they hover over his stomach. He’s head is turned like he’s just about to look over his shoulder, while his expression is one of animalistic anguish - wide, directionless eyes and mouth agape as his bottom fangs peak out. The trees close in on him, dark silhouettes with no leaves. Thick fog suffocates the scene, creeping towards him in waves. The piece is comprised of greys and desaturated colours, with a hint of purple beneath the whole drawing - they are applied in a fuzzy texture. A subtle splatter of red starts in the bottom left corner and rests on his clawed hands.]

WOW I’m late (I got caught up the first two days; still working on my teas for day 1!) but here are two playlists for day 3:

(I’ll go back and add explanations for each song later; right now I’m kind of tired of analysis though, so you can just imagine that I’m saying very clever things in your mind)

I don’t have the time or energy to go further into this rn but I just need to say this now so I’ll eventually will but in regard to the themes present in the wolf man (1941), and in some way it’s future remakes, I’ve realized recently that the theme of “taking responsibility” is one of them. Like Lawrence has to take on new responsibilities after the death of his brother, and also the responsibility associated with the death of Bela and the curse, and also there’s Sir Talbot forsaking his own responsibilities of making sure Larry is fine due to his own inner turmoil of not wanting his son to leave again. Like the wolf man is a tragic movie that plays upon the idea that anyone can be infected by the curse, similar to the idea of anyone can be a hero as associated with comic characters like spider man. But it also must be noted how much the theme of responsibility is associated with the film and in some ways integral to the story.

Even a man who is pure in heart

And says his prayers by night,

May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms

And the moon is full and bright.

More Tally for the soul. I tried out a different rendering style for this one and IDK how I feel about it.

Rewatching The Wolf Man (1941 then the 2010 remake later) and I noticed something I’ve never seen ANYONE talk about.

So. When Larry mentions his brother John’s death, it shows a portrait of Lon Chaney Jr., the actor for Larry himself.

And most people I’ve seen talk about this joke about it being one of those ‘silly movie things’, and that they just threw a portrait of the movie’s main Actor up there…. But No! I say No!

This actually implies HEAVILY that Larry Talbot was an IDENTICAL TWIN.

And now I will never get over this because it recontextualizes his depression so much more potently.

LARRY TALBOT MISSES HIS TWIN AND NOBODY EVEN CARES!!!!!
