in my minds eye sniper is kind of awkward about PDA and seems pretty aloof around other people, but when its just him and his partner hes a lot more affectionate. demo on the other hand i think is less reserved with his affection but somewhat shy about receiving it, so these two end up in a loop of exacting revenge on one another in the form of kissies

Low effort low quality Christmas doodle I farted out b4 the holiday ends, had a good crimbo with the extended family, watched fnaf 2 and 1 ½ LOTR movies. I got a laptop which means I’ve spent the past 2 days messing around with sfm (I thought it would be way harder but compared to blender its a lot easier for me to goof in lol) so perhaps a Swordvan related sfm something may come your way in the far future. Okay I’ve reread the main tf2 comics so I feel more informed to yap about what I think went on to make Demoman and Sniper weirdly mad at each other in Blood in the Water (MEGA YAP SESH INCOMING! May be slightly influenced by head cannons sry not sry)

We know that Snipers parents died around the same time he got fired, which meant that on top of being out of work he had to go back and take care of things like their post-mortem care and maintaining the house (which it’s implied he doesn’t really do out of grief, understandable). Sniper is already a pretty lonesome type of person but it certainly could NOT do him any good to go awol from the team while processing the passing of his parents, which is evident by the fact that he acts waaay more paranoid around Pauling and Demo when they arrive and he tries to get information out of her.

Like was knocking him out again really necessary man? 😓

He doesn’t want demoman to know he was adopted or all the work he put into figuring out OR the fact he went off the grid to find this stuff out, and tries to threaten Pauling to get info. Again, Snioer is already a bit of a loner and paranoid but it’s weird he would do this to people he worked with for years!

It’s obvious that the mix of his getting fired and moving back home, grieving over his parents death, and finding out he was adopted combined with him going off the grid and isolating himself from people worsened his paranoia a lot. I don’t think Sniper would normally drug people he knew and worked with if he thought they would be able to help (Doodle for example of what I think him ‘going off the grid’ looked like most of the time ~.~)

This is all stuff I gathered from the comics, which answers the sniper side of things but I still want to know about the demoman side. They’ve never been established to particularly dislike or like one another before this scene, so where are these remarks from demoman coming from?

(He did end up being right about sniper being a loon here but as previously argued this is not how sniper is normally)

The answer I can think of that adheres most to canon would be that since they’ve never really been shown hanging out before, they never really got to know each other past the simple view of each other they had when they worked together. Demoman being in the front lines and Sniper being in the back, they’re wouldn’t be much cross over happening (which doesn’t really hold true since Sniper and Scout are friends but I’m going somewhere with this).

That doesn’t feel right to me, so here’s the little indulgent conclusion I came to. What if they were friends before getting fired, and Sniper got the news about his parents before he left for the outback?

We know demoman fell into a depression after getting fired and seemed to have just stayed at home, isolating himself much the same way Sniper did to support his mother with his fortunes.

Having a job is a source of pride for him and without one he easily falls into bad habits (beer all at once club 😭) that worsen his depression especially without support. You might be thinking, “hey isn’t his mother there too? She’s trying to cheer him up by trying to get him out of the house more!”, and to that I say it’s complex. Demomum might be trying to help, but she does it in a pretty abrasive way and don’t forget that the whole abandoning a child till they show their proficiency is also implied to be a big factor in why demoman has depression. Without any type of support system like the one he had in tf2, he spirals.

Which is why I think he’s resentful towards Sniper once they meet up again. It’s very easy for a depressed persons mind to make shit up to keep them depressed and hard to forget that stuff isn’t true when you’re getting better especially if you’re unmedicated (I know bc I have depression!). So even though Demoman knew Sniper was grieving over his parents, it probably still hurt to not hear from anybody for so long and especially Sniper since he was one of the later ones to join.

So there it is, it turns out the reason behind it all was that their isolation from friends is what caused their preexisting issues to worsen. Now, with my little headcannon spin on Sniper where he has AvPD (Avoidant Personality Disorder), this makes a lot of sense because avoiding the thing that causes a person anxiety makes it way worse for people, especially those with AvPD! Of course he was gonna end up thinking Ms. Pauling was somehow in on covering up the circumstances of his birth, and knock out demo when trying to get information. He’s built up the fear and anxiety of sharing any information about himself to people and only pushes through because he thinks he’ll just kill them after having to talk to the minimum amount of people possible.
