Oh wow, I’ll be completely honest, I wasn’t even expecting Dealmaker to be considered at all hahaha
It’s funny you pick those two because they are as opposite of my Swatchton characterization as you can get x)
So opposite in fact that they’re the first and last swatchton fics I ever wrote :D
The Dealmaker was written to be my take on the “Swatch finds Spamton in the dumpster” genre. I wasn’t considering to make an AU, nor that I’d become as obsessed as I did, as such my characterization of the two of them is more focused on putting them in as many cute and fluff scenarios as I could ;w; I had some deeper lore I wanted to set up, (specifically with the dealmaker as in the item) but nothing really came of it, pretty sure I dropped that fic to start writing Little Shot instead
Shoulder to Cry On however, already had Deltacable established and “my” Spamton and “my” Swatch also had much more fleshed out personalities and dynamic and I personally like the characterization on that fic a lot more, even if the writing still leaves a lot to be desired :)
I never properly finished either of these fics, but Shoulder was a lot more focused on writing something closer to canon (albeit still canon to Deltacable), but I also wanted to write something that could be read as platonic, and before all the baggage that those two end up having later on their stories.
I love Swatchton, and I definitely feel like my love for the ship does cloud my judgement of how the characterization is x) So writing something less focused on the romance and more on the different power dynamics those two have is just very fun

given that the laptop seems to have been brought over to the dreemurrs’ by noelle, and given that spamton and tenna’s relationship is founded on something spurred on by dess’ leaving hometown (tenna no longer being watched by the whole family, and thusly wanting to secure viewership again by way of spamton’s secret,) i really don’t think tenna saw the cyber crew all that often. to him, they were always just out of reach.

i like to consider it a spamton exclusive–not because only he can do that, but because it’s something only he would do. because it looks like he copied the swatchlings’ attacks and made them his.

notably, red and orange swatchlings use the small bird attack. (blue swatchlings jump into the box and use their bodies to attack, funnily enough. and yellow and green swatchlings attack with the cloches, which will occasionally have healing bullets (candy).) it is not hard for me to see correlations between their attacks, and spamton’s own attacks.

it also is fitting that a spam email can spam and replicate himself so much, which is a very spamton thing.
i will admit that similarities to the swatchlings’ and spamton’s attacks are likely meant to be for the sake of game progression – teaching the players how to fight the next enemies/bosses – but deltarune and undertale both seem to be games that encourage ludonarrative analysis, so i’m not as shy about connecting the mechanics and the story together.
so my operating headcanon here is that spamton either practiced fighting with swatch/the swatchlings, or he picked up a few things while trying to infiltrate the mansion… or, easily, both!

unrelated but i would like to note that the swatchlings can apparently change their sizes for the sake of attacks. it’s possible this is primarily only for the sake of visuals in the fight, but i have always had the headcanon that all darkners can shapeshift to some degree – it just depends on for what purpose and what they are. swatchlings have been headcanoned as computer graphics, of course they can be resized; tenna is a tv, everything is bigger on tv (but gets shrunk down to fit on tv too); so forth.
deeper headcanon territory: i certainly think it is possible for other darkners, addison or not, to be able to emulate or copy others’ attacks to varying degrees of success. i know it is a common headcanon that spamton’s chronic marketing failure also extended to his magic or battle prowess, but it is not a headcanon that i share. as evidenced by him being a miniboss twice, spamton (before the sneo fight) either is already strong enough to hold his own at his weakest or is that desperate/willing to not hold back.
that said, i do think it’s important in a character sanctity/theme way that spamton is uniquely him. most of his attacks are basically copy-pasting himself over and over and over, and generally trying to overload and overwhelm the opponent with himself, his ego. and yet, all he can seem to do nowadays is copy, parrot, and rip off what has already been done. even if he can do it “better”. especially if he can do it better.
the underground fighting ring is an incredibly funny concept though. i do not think most swatchlings would want to pit their birds against each other unless their Lady Queen demanded it… okay yeah they probably have done it several times before. i envision bird bullet bird shows. spamton tries to sneak in for the prize money, that does not exist, because the swatchlings were doing it for fun. probably one of the ways he got kicked out
last indulgence: with my oc, the pink senior addison… i like to imagine that spamton still got a lot of his fighting strategy from his parent. the pink senior is still leagues above him and most others, but the senior’s means of “overloading and overwhelming” utilizes speed, precision, and a metric fuckton of weapons. i have been meaning to eventually draw this
