How to Study Effectively

Effective studying involves more than just re-reading your notes or reviewing flashcards. To truly understand and retain the material, it’s important to use a variety of study techniques. Some tips for studying effectively include:

  • Breaking up your study sessions into smaller chunks, rather than trying to cram all at once.
  • Staying organized by using a planner or calendar to keep track of assignments and test dates.
  • Varying your study techniques, such as teaching the material to someone else or writing a summary of what you’ve learned.
  • Finding a study spot that is quiet and free of distractions.
  • Starting to review the material well in advance of a test, rather than waiting until the last minute.

By incorporating these strategies into your study routine, you can set yourself up for success and improve your performance on exams and assignments.

First PhD week

16|07|2022

First weef of Ph.D.: already working a few notes based on the first papers I have to read during this month.

Nothing too overwhelming, just to have some context on what I am are going to study, previous research discoveries and issues mainly.

It’s for me the perfect ocassion to review some cellular biology and physilogical concepts, such as Kupffer cells.

As you can see on the picture my notes are a mix of writehanded and digital notes, mostly because I have a writing memory.

This combination allows me to keep all the references at hand a memorize quicker.

What do you prefer??

Neurodivergent student hack of Possible Interest: use Otter.ai to dictate those shitty first drafts of papers. The speech-to-text is pretty good (my friend who speaks AAVE says it’s just ok though) and you can export the text file to wherever you want.

How to study smart

You don’t have to rewrite/retype all of your lecture notes. Especially if you’re taking more than 5 content-heavy subjects.

What you can do to save your time:

1) edit your lecture notes (*my fav*)

2) flashcards (useful when you have no choice but to study last minute yet you still want to ace the exam)

3) summaries

4) mindmaps (Only include the main points. Use the lecture notes for the explanations.)

How do I edit my lecture notes?

Sometimes the lecturer loves to use up so much spaces by putting one point in one slide. 1) You could compile all of those separate points by taking screenshots, freehand crop them and paste the images on a single page. 2) Strike off the extra words that aren’t necessary. 3) Type a sentence as a replacement for that one long paragraph.

I do it this way bcs I like to condense my notes so that it looks shorter and it makes my brain think that I have lesser info to study.

I really regret wasting my time by rewriting/retyping my notes when I can spend more time to study and retain these info more. But if it’s a subject (eg. Biochemistry) that has lots of complex theories and explanations, then it is advisable to rewrite your notes.

Hope it helps! 🙌

P.S: I use Goodnotes to edit my notes.

Ich hoffe, ihr habt alle ein schönes #Wochenende !

Ich editiere gerade meinen Text auf dem Bett (fühlt sich so weniger nach Arbeit an 😋) und ich benutze heute mal einen grünen Stift dafür. Wirkt gleich viel weniger aggressiv 😅.

Während rot 🖍mir sagt, “Alles falsch! So viele Baustellen! Gib auf, das wird nicht besser!”, unterstützt mich grün✏️ eher: “Ah, interessant! Wie wäre es damit oder mit diesem Wort? Tolles Thema, da steckt noch viel mehr dahinter!” #Farbenpsychologie

In meinem Zustand nimmt man alles, was hilft 🤷🙆🤣😂
