QCD explains how quarks and gluons interact to form protons, neutrons, and other hadrons. The strong force is responsible for binding quarks together within protons and neutrons and binding protons and neutrons together within atomic nuclei. QCD is characterized by two key properties: confinement and asymptotic freedom. Confinement refers to the fact that quarks and gluons are never found in isolation but always in bound states. Asymptotic freedom means that at high energies or short distances, quarks interact more weakly and behave almost as free particles.
