I finished my fic for @fandomtrumpshate this year! It’s a Szeth/Nale in Braize AU for the amazing @blindradiant and I’m so excited!!! I stretched my writing muscles for this because I don’t usually right as much action and angst as this! 😅

https://archiveofourown.org/works/81331426

Anger was not what made Szeth’s heart constrict, what roiled and settled deep within his gut. It was… he did not know what it was. Only the loss of something he’d once thought he held, only a question breathed into the dark - did he have worth - and a yawning, gaping absence. He knew he was a tool. Knew Nin was meant to wield him. But there were times he’d held him like a weapon lowered, like something that did not need to kill. Like someone.

I got a bit too drunk and rambled to my friend/player about now investiture works in the Rosharan system. He’s learning things about his radiant order and fabrials and just how easy it is for radiants to be like “I infuse this thing with x amount of Stuff, and yeah! I just do the thing. Ta-da! :)”

“Storming fools. Shouldn’t have followed me. Proud of them anyway.”

Rereading ‘Words’ in The Way of Kings, and the number of typos I made writing this quote I know better than the back of my hand is embarrassing, but every time I read this part my fingers shake as badly as if I was the one suddenly drained of Stormlight having drawn a hundred arrows to myself to protect my Bridge Four.

Not every slutty blond man, red headed woman, and man with long black hair standing next to each other is Shakadolin. It feels wrong, but it’s true.

I love sharing my favorite books with my lil brother.

So he’s listening to the Stormlight audiobooks right now. He’s already through the first book and well into the second. He just finished the chapter where Shallan infiltrates Amaram’s house. While he was listening to it i told him two things: 1) she finds out something big at the end of the chapter and 2) keep what we know about how Amaram for his shardblade in mind. When he finished the chapter, he texted me “WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT”. I ran around the house for a minute to find him and talk about it. He had the realization that Kaladin killed Helaran right there with me.

I’m so happy I get to share my favorite books with my brother and gush over them with someone who isn’t a stranger who found one of my tumblr posts on their dash.

Despite the typical anxiety with adaptations (Wheel of Time was a disappointment), I am very excited about Cosmere movies and TV shows. In particular, the budget and creative freedom that Apple TV will give Sanderson sets my mind at ease.

What really concerns me is the community/fandom that will be introduced to it from here on out. It already had quite a lot of online users that I’d rather not ever see opinions from. I worry about the size and scale of fandom. Will we see a tumblr-esque latching-on to orders of knights radiant and metallic arts users like we saw with the hogwarts houses? What kind of inane discourse will we see about already established characters with full arcs and romantic interests? What huge celebrities will come out of the woodwork saying that “yeah I’ve actually always been into these books” to try and land roles?

With Sanderson having such a tight reign on them I think that they will be very consistent with the books in terms of characterization and plot but with him being a big people pleaser I wouldn’t put it past him to accept certain changes that help his IP have ‘broader appeal’. We’ve seen this already with his books: Renarin’s Big Gay Kiss (despite what he says I can’t believe it was ever meant to be as big a deal as it became in WaT), canonized transgenderism, modern therapy-speak when talking about characters’ mental health (hoo-boy am I not excited for discourse on this part of Stormlight).

I’m a Cosmere oldhead and I’m not excited for the new blood.

So since we’re now closer than ever before to a stormlight show being actual reality

A thing that I’ve been thinking of for a while:

How to convey the Singer/Listener/Parshendi Rhythms in an audiovisual adaptation?

I know that the audiobook narrators tried their hand at talking “in rhythm” but that fell flat for me tbh.

I think Rhythm, specifically, in the way Sanderson has set this up within the Roshar worldbuilding, would be difficult to convey in an audiovisual medium without cheapening it. (As i feel happened in the audiobooks)

Bc there’s supposed to be so many different kinds of Rhythms to attune to. I feel like melody or chords would be more recognizable as an audience throughout the show.

So make the Rhoshar Rhythms be the actual soundtrack to the show.

Make the different Rhythms leidmotifs, and have the Singers/Listener/Parshendi characters talk either in tune or in time/rhythm with the soundtrack, and change whatever the soundtrack is doing when they attune a different Rhythm.

This would be So Cool, and it would be so interestingly meta, and I’m not sure if it’s actually achievable bc I’m sure it would mean a lot of planning and communication upfront between actors and composers and editors and producers and what have you.

But wouldn’t it be So Cool, tho?

I’m actually terrified of the announcement of the adaptations because of how this effects the writing schedule for Stormlight Archive, and how it’s going to affect the fandom. I appreciate how much control Sanderson has managed to secure for both pieces of media, but that’s not going to stop people misunderstanding the themes and totally failing to appreciate some of the deeper nuances, instead just seeing “wow cool show with magic fights”.
