REVIEW
Blue Wind EchoAqua Nihhilus

Have you ever listened to qebrµs? If not, you should look into his works—the late great flashcore producer’s dizzying music combined inhuman speed and complexity with wet, plasticky, and organik percussion (with a “k,” yes—it only seems right somehow). If you are familiar with his work, you might have asked yourself, “What would it have been like if qebrµs made speedcore?” Okay, you probably haven’t—but maybe you have! Here’s another question you probably haven’t asked: “What if splittercore evolved from PC Music’s sonic palette instead of hardcore’s?”

Though I highly doubt either of those questions were on Blue Wind Echo’s mind when they started producing Aqua Nihhilus, pushing at the fringiest boundaries of electronic music, they are the best frames of reference I can conjure. More precisely, Aqua Nihhilus is an eight-minute concept EP tackling the brutal lethality of water, blending splittercore speeds with the wettest field recordings and drum sounds imaginable, approaching that combination with song structures and titles reminiscent of gorenoise.

At the heart of any speedcore, splittercore, or extratone is its kick, distorted to the point of exaggeration and played at equally exaggerated speed. While speedcore has grown more melodic and accessible over time, thanks largely due to the influence of other hardcore genres upon it, the rapidly beating heart of speedcore has remained its staple feature. And you won’t find that modern sense of melodicism here—but stripping the genre down to its barest essential isn’t stripped down enough for Blue Wind Echo—the distortion, too, must go. The blasted, hyper-aggressive kicks of speedcore have been eroded by a river’s water into digital clicks, thuds, and thumps. If speedcore’s gabber drums are a power drill to the brain, Aqua Nihhilus instead offers to rumble your skull with a Magic Wand. The ultra-minimal approach to the compositions on Aqua Nihhilus is aided greatly by the most wet-sounding field recordings you’re ever going to hear in your life. Running streams, bubbling machines, water parks, and underwater recordings complement the bubbly percussion, fill the space left behind by the lack of other elements, and highlight the gore-in-water theme of the EP.

Blue Wind Echo, coming from a vaporwave background, is pushing speedcore into unfamiliar territory—new developments and unique experiences in electronic music are always pretty exciting, and I highly recommend checking out Aqua Nihhilus for a front-row seat to an esoteric genre’s freshest output.
