There’s a new predictive earthquake app circling right now called Terra Watch! Three years ago, this concept was supposed to be only educational, but it’s evolved to become highly predictive. All of the information on this app was taken from preexisting texts and well-respected websites like USGS.

I was able to test out this app for myself in its early development, and it managed to predict several major Philippine and Japanese earthquakes within last year.

So far, Terra Watch is only available on Android, but it has plans to further expand to other app stores in the future. The developers are also planning to add a news feature!!

The iteration process

Iteration means repeating a process to generate a (possibly unbounded) sequence of outcomes (Wikipedia, Iteration).

Iteration is a familiar term from my university years; how a product is never ready and always under scrutiny to be developed further.

I find it interesting how people define “ready”. Who decides when something is ready, how people define it, and how it differs from person to person. Those who think there is no ready might be onto something. Especially in the (software or product) development fields, there is always something to do better. Also, you have to learn to let go of your ideas if they are not good enough (also a term that I despise and I’m always willing to argue over).

If there is always something to better and there is no ready, then why do we even talk about ready products? Does anyone even talk about them? Are they only done or good enough to go live?

Merriam-Webster says that synonyms for “ready” are for example ripe, prepared, primed, and qualified. So maybe it’s just the thought of being the best it can be at the moment. But what about the next moment?

BUT ANYWAY, the iteration process with the Flatpickr calendar was basically:

• try something
• decide that it was not good
• asked for help and assistance
• did some coding
• WE decided it was not good (HTML5)
• did some research
• made some testing with different options so that I would not make the same mistakes I did before
• WE dediced that it was good
• chose Flatpickr
• did the coding

What I learned from this? The fact that there needs to be discussion and transparency in the process; about what has been tried and what are the downfalls with the options available. Iteration goes hand in hand with open discourse.

Calendar issues

There is a need for a calendar view on the website I’m developing, to pick a date for an event. The one originally used was jQuery (a Javascript library) but as you can see from the pic below, it was quite… interesting. The Internet says it was designed in 2010s. Intuitive and easy-to-use would not be the words I would use to describe this monster.

So we decided to try with HTML5. You would think it would work just fine but we faced some issues that we didn’t even think about could happen. There were quite big differences between different browsers and the quality was not quite enough for the website. It did do the job on Firefox, but it didn’t work as well with Chromium and Opera. Mobile had major issues and the date format was a mismatch. Finnish format (dd.mm.yyyy) was not supported.

JQuery does work well with browsers across the board but it is quite large in size. If you wanted to pick a time also, you would need a separate addon. It was also not designed for mobile touch screens.

After a brief discussion with my best digital friend, Cursor, I decided to give it the chance to convince me with its options. We would need a simple, clean and easy to maintain solution.

After some consideration, and some convincing from Cursor, Flatpickr was introduced. As it is described on their website: “flatpickr is a lightweight and powerful datetime picker. Lean, UX-driven, and extensible, yet it doesn’t depend on any libraries.”

Look at that beauty. It did need some editing with the colors and styling but otherwise it works so nicely. I’m quite disappointed in HTML5, but five stars for Flatpickr.
