DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Our Father, when we read your description of human nature we are sure it is true, for you have seen humanity ever since his fall and you have been grieved from the heart about them. At the same, you have such a love towards them that you did not judge him harshly; and every word that you have spoken must be according to truth. You have measured and calculated the iniquity of man, for you have laid it on your beloved Son; and we know that you have not laid upon him more than is necessary.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.” (Psalm 51:5)
He is thunderstruck at the discovery of his inbred sin, and proceeds to set it forth. This was not intended to justify himself, but it rather meant to complete the confession. It is as if he said, not only have I sinned this once, but I am in my very nature a sinner. The fountain of my life is polluted as well as its streams. My birth-tendencies are out of the square of equity; I naturally lean to forbidden things. Mine is a constitutional disease, rendering my very person obnoxious to thy wrath.

Long time, no post. I’ve been taking a bit of a sabbatical from writing. Now that I’m back, I decided to write about a rather interesting topic: What is sin? That is an incredibly loaded question, and I hope my answer isn’t too simple for you!

If someone has ever pointed these out as your sin(s), reflect on them rather than call those who rebuke your sins as “hateful” and “bigoted”:
if you are lustful - even if you are a virgin, but you delight in lustful imagery and acts, and you glorify homosexuality to appease your sinful peers - then the devil is trying to smother your God-given capacity to be compassionate. Rather than use your natural talent for empathy, as God intended, you are instead led to squander it on debauchery.
If you are a habitual drinker, a drunkard, then the devil is smothering your talent to be thinker. The devil sees the good in your thoughts, the greatness that might spring from in and glorify God, so the devils drowns it with strong drink - that lethargy and confusion and rage might squander your energy and potential.
If you are greedy, and you covet your wealth - and you pour your fortune on vain things such as jewelry - then the devil knows you could’ve and could still use that wealth to help your brothers and sisters in Christ; the devil knows you could’ve extended your fortune to help those in need; so the devil blinds you glimmering jewels and worldly titles that mean naught when we all reach our graves. The devil knows you could’ve helped so many people, but the devil instead blinded you with fleeting possessions you won’t be able to carry with you in the hereafter.
If you are gluttonous - you eat rather than work, rather than train, rather than study, rather than see the world as proof of God’s glory, you see opportunities to stuff yourself - then the devil knows the glory and beauty of which your worldly body is capable; of the vastness in knowledge you are capable of attaining; of the great depths and great heights you are capable of reaching. The devil makes you flabby, weak, lethargic - a far cry from the image of God.
