Summary:
After the death of his wife, Michael Samuelle finds a lifeline in a compassionate stranger named Nikita.
When he walks out of Section One, Michael really doesn’t have a destination in mind. The subterranean high-tech corridors of steel, concrete, and glass were not only claustrophobic but ripe with reminders of what he’d lost. When he emerges onto the city street, with its pedestrians and honking horns, he almost regrets his decision. The afternoon was sunny to the point that it took his eyes a second to adjust, and the skies were a clear cerulean blue. It was a beautiful day to be outside.
He hates it.
At the first café he comes across, he sits on the terrace and orders an espresso with sugar. Simone often took her coffee this way.
Michael tells himself that he came here for the quiet. But really, he came here looking for ghosts. Simone had loved cafés—the smell of roasted beans, the uneven tables, and the way the sunlight spilled through the windows at certain times of the day. He can almost hear her laugh when he closes his eyes. Almost.
Behind him, the bell on the door chimes softly as people enter and exit. Business is brisk.
A passing patron jostles his table slightly, and Michael glances up in time to see a woman politely apologize for the disturbance.
“Excusez-moi,” she says before entering.
He sees her, but he doesn’t really see her. She was just one of countless people in this city that wasn’t Simone.
Despite the grief consuming him, life in Paris proceeds as usual. Traffic, laughter, and the low hum of the living taunt him. Michael stirs his espresso absently. He stares into the street before him, watching and trying to fathom how his increasing detachment hasn’t resulted in his immediate death.
There’s been no decrease in his responsibilities at Section. No simple assignments to give him something less to worry about. He’s maintained expected efficiency, but Michael’s world holds little meaning. He’s going through the motions of his life like an automaton, just waiting for someone to be quick enough to catch him off guard.
Michael’s not suicidal, but he’d almost welcome having the decision taken away from him.

ALTI wanted to try more animal-related drawings, and I wanted to draw each character in their typical winter wear looks, so: my OCs as Animal Crossing villagers (kinda). I know the species are not accurate, but I wanted to use the animals I gave them as daemons earlier. I tried to keep to the personality/hobby types of the game though!

like imagine thinking anxiety and depression and regular family trauma and an eating disorder and ocd is the worst thing that could ever happen. then you lose your platonic soulmate love of your life and know you’ll grieve forever and you want to die without her and it’s partly your fault and you’ve been in therapy for years with guilt and ptsd, then smash your teeth and get raped and almost lose an eye. and you’re still not even twenty seven so fuck knows what’ll happen next. And you’re now for some inexplicable reason doing a PhD.

Continuing the answer to this ask…
- Do you have a voice claim for [any/all of] the characters? What do you imagine the character sounds like?
I have put all of my answers under a cut because they include lots of videos 😅 Much of this was copied from a conversation with a friend about our OC’s voices.

She has a London-based English accent (many thanks to my friend Nev who is amazing at placing specific British accents), and she sounds somewhere between actress Ritu Arya and musician Suzi Wu (samples below).
Simone grew up a little bit spoiled but with a wide social circle, so she’s used to being catty/flippant/deadpan in her speech habits and getting away with it. She has a tendency to talk quickly/chattily, which slows down when she’s smoking weed. She is a think-out-loud kind of person who talks to her taxidermy animals when she’s alone out in her trailer in the desert.
Rafi
Rafi’s voice is the most difficult for me to find any match for because he spent his childhood in Brazil, but his formative years after that were spent in LA in the entertainment industry, and he is fluent in English. I think his Brazilian accent is very subtle and difficult to place. When he’s sober, it’s mainly his vocal rhythms and the occasional consonant sound that gives him away. When he’s drunk though, that Brazilian sing-song-y intonation comes out in spades. The video below explains this speech pattern in a very silly way:
Ignoring the accent, I imagine his voice is most similar to Lee Pace’s.

I’ve decided he sounds the most like Nick Bakay (who I know mainly as Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch lmao). He can put on that engaging sports/news-caster cadence, but his tone often veers toward condescending/patronizing/deadpan. He can also ham it up a bit.
Mia
To be honest I chose Cassie Steele for Mia because she voices my favourite character from Rick & Morty (I have not seen that show in ~10 years, but love Tammy 4ever 🫶). The two characters have similar vibes (outwardly kind of flirty/unserious girl, secretly both a lot smarter & more guarded than the images they project).
