As Monty Python would say, “and now for something completely different.” This podcast tries to explore all facets of our jewel we call magic. And one part of our entertainment community has its roots in the side show. Specifically, in the early to mid-1900’s magicians were part of the traveling carnivals and performed side show acts using such illusions as the stocks, blade box, and more. But as the magicians went to the legitimate stage, the other side show performers stayed behind as independent nomads. But their business of finding work is just as important as magicians trying to find work. And for “freaks” in today’s world, there are fewer venues (and perhaps audiences) who can “stomach” watching some of their acts. Moreover, freaks have become less shocking as being obesely overweight and covered in tattoos are now common sites at your local WalMart shopping centers.
This week Lizard Man tells us about why he chose to pursue a life and a lifestyle different from the “norm” and his commitment to getting tattoos and body piercings all over his body. But part of the focus of our conversation is how similar yet different our two crafts are when it comes to marketing. Magicians have a community to help, support, and direct, but the side show community is less giving and supportive.

This Piano Performance Is Absolutely SHOCKING 😱
What would it be like to know how to do one thing as well as this? I’ve always had too many interests and no worthwhile deep passions. Now that I know all about the world and humanity, there’s nothing more beautiful to me than expertise that is obsessive to the point of second-nature.
That and valor…because valor has absolutely no use in the world except to remind us of our greatest human capacity: to fuse thought and intention into love.
Mostly though, we are a sideshow, like the great novel exclaimed.

The impending extreme cold weather has pushed back my talk at Boswell about my new book, The 388 Tattoos of Captain George.
New date is Friday, February 13th at 6:30pm.
There is time to pre-order a copy through Boswell so you make sure you get one!
a little bit of sleep and then a little bit more sleep and some good weed and all of a sudden that brain starts to lumber back to work
where there used to be only blind pursuit of some purpose or goal now there is aimlessness and empty
there is a disregard for the daily responsibilities of ones life that youve been chasing for fuck knows how long
like you can tell the whole world to its face to go fuck itself and you can just crawl back into bed and let the fucking rock spin as it may
hell go ahead and spin us right the fuck off into space
i sure could use a vacation
