Randomly decided to sing schubert’s erlkönig without warming up, strained my voice a bit as a result. Call that Erlkönig hat mir ein leids getan

Klimt enthusiasts, be aware! I have a book of his works that has been sitting around for a while and I finally decided to try to scan some of my favorite pieces of him…so stay tuned! I’ll start you off with his painting of one of my also favorite composers, Franz Schubert, who’s mercilessly described as this short, ugly, and timid man—unless he’s had a drink or two. He’s said to have had a very unfortunate life, only ever livelier when playing and singing around friends. The second movement of Symphony No. 8, or Große Sinfonie (The Great), is my top favorite pick from him, with the String Quintet (Streichquintett) in close 2nd.

German’s all fine and fun until you try to sing the Die Forelle AKA The Samsung Washing Machine Song and realize it’s a fucking tongue twister with like five hundred words ending in -icht and among them are ones ending in -ich and you sound like a fucking asthmatic with every sound you make
My lovely Franz Schubert

I currently want to know a lot more about him. I like the Viennese school composers, and I can understand the impact of this school on Schubert (especially in the konvikt). But his music is just something else for me. The character, the general melodism, the approach to the central conflict in music are really interesting for me. And I love singing his lieder so much…
What can I say? Early romanticism (and romanticism in general) is great.

Franz Peter SCHUBERT’s Six Moments Musicaux, Op. 94 (D. 780) represent one of the finest examples of poetic expression in piano literature. Each of these six self-contained pieces captures a world of mood, atmosphere, and emotional color, offering a glimpse into the soul of one of the Romantic era’s most introspective and lyrical composers.
Written between 1823 and 1828, these short works reveal Schubert’s extraordinary gift for melody, his sensitivity to harmonic nuance, and his ability to transform simple forms into profound emotional statements. From the serene tenderness of the Andantino to the haunting melancholy of the Allegretto in F minor, each moment speaks with its own voice — intimate, sincere, and deeply human.
Unlike large-scale sonatas or virtuosic showpieces, Six Moments Musicaux embody the Romantic miniature at its most personal. Schubert invites the listener into a world where introspection replaces grandeur, and where every phrase breathes with sincerity and grace. These works bridge the space between Classical restraint and Romantic freedom, allowing pianists to explore phrasing, tone, and balance with profound sensitivity.
This modern edition has been carefully prepared to preserve the integrity of Schubert’s original text while offering modern readability and clarity. Engraved with precision and designed for ease of performance, it serves as both an artistic reference and a practical guide for students, educators, and performers. Ornamentation, articulation, and phrasing have been thoughtfully presented to align with historical practice while maintaining playability.
Whether performed in recital, studied in the classroom, or simply enjoyed at the piano, Schubert’s Moments Musicaux continue to resonate as expressions of timeless beauty and poetic depth. Their emotional honesty and quiet elegance make them essential repertoire for pianists seeking to connect deeply with the Romantic spirit.
