There seems to be a large debate amongst Christians on how person is supposed to praise Christ in regards to music. It would seem to some that this should be a non-issue. But to many this is very important and complicated topic. Is there a specific way in which someone should sing/praise to Christ? Are hymns the only appropriate way or are more modern ways appropriate as well?

I want to state first that I completely understand why this is an issue to many Christians. For many people, praise in the form of music is an extremely sacred and traditional practice. In many cases, they have always sung in church only using hymns that have existed for hundreds of years and thus are very shocked to hear modern Christian rock or even screamo in other congregations. Some find these more modern styles very annoying and others even sinful.
But just because someone is not used to a different music style, does that necessarily mean it’s wrong?
From what the Bible has to say, I don't believe it is. It’s important on every Christian to consult the Bible and see what the Lord has to say on the matter. Because we can debate for hours using our own opinions but that really never will solve the issue. As we know, every man is right in his own eyes.
Well, after seeing what the Bible has to say on the issue I would conclude that there is no one specific way Christians are supposed to praise God with music. Here are several passages that detail praise, some even specifically with music, but none detail one specific correct tune or melody:
Psalms 67:3 “May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you.”
Psalms 146:1 “Praise the Lord.Praise the Lord, my soul.”
Psalms 149:1 “ Praise the Lord. Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of his faithful people.”
Psalms 47:1 “Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy.”
None of these passages show any right way to sing to God or what type of music is appropriate. The only really style it points too is being loud and genuine in song/praise and not half-heartedly giving God glory.
It states in 1 Samuel 6:14 that David even danced when he praised the Lord and that loud tambourines can used (Psalm 150:4). But it never states this is the only way to praise the God. Once again, it only seems to promote and loud, genuine expression of praise that can be exhibited in multiple forms of music styles.
I think it’s fair to conclude from this that there really is no one right way to praise God. Though some people say old hymns are the only right way, that’s really only a preference. And it’s fine for a person to like hymns over gospel or modern rock but one should not discourage others from praising God with the music they like to praise Him with. That’s their decision, their choice. And even if the music isn’t a person’s style or even frightens them, it’s not their place to discourage praise.
God doesn’t care if your praising Him with screamo or with country. Praise is praise.
So instead of worrying about whether someone is using the right instrument or the right tone of voice, one should really concentrate on praising the Lord with sound. Because in the end, it doesn’t matter what the sound sounds like as long as it is a sound of praise.
