Glad you enjoyed it! I was also a little surprised that Luke would consider killing his nephew, but in Return of the Jedi, there are moments when he is so angry that he’s willing to strike down the Emperor and Vader. So it’s not like it’s unprecedented.

Yeah, that’s a good point. He did go totally balistic on Vader as soon as he threatened to go after Leia and turn her so I guess the thought that Ben could be capable of the same thing would be enough to provoke that brief reaction from him as well. I guess all Skywalker men apparently have anger management issues, although at least Luke is usually much better at controlling his temper than either Anakin or Kylo.

I still can’t say I’m entirely happy with Luke’s story in the movie, but that’s mainly because he’s my favorite character in the franchise and it hurts to see him of all people being so bitter and jaded for so much of the movie. But his return to form at the end with his sacrifice was pretty fantastic and a fitting way for him to go out at least!

I wouldn’t say that interpretation explains or excuses how Mai and Ishizu are sidelined in this art, just that most likely Takahashi’s main intent was not to portray the two of them in a sexist, pejorative light. (Though the fact that the sexism, whether intentional or not, exists is problematic in itself.) Don’t worry, I didn’t take that last bit personally, and I do understand why you’re angry. But thank you for taking the time to clarify your comment.

I mean, I don’t think that Takahashi sat down, twirled his mustache, and thought, “How can I degrade my female characters this time?”, but I don’t buy that he didn’t consciously decide to make the two women—the only two women—in the piece the ones who are confused and distressed over the boys running off with Pokémon Go. If this art existed by itself, okay, maybe I could buy that, but it doesn’t. At the beginning of July Takahashi posted official art to his Instagram that followed a similar sexist stereotype for Anzu, in that she was aggravated that Yuugi was absorbed in playing a card game with Jounouchi instead of paying attention to her (and thus resorted to a petty, passive-aggressive tactic of calling his phone while seated right next to him to get his attention). Whether he consciously wants to degrade his female characters by doing these things to them isn’t really relevant; the fact is that he clearly holds some sexist beliefs, and that is bleeding over into his work. What makes it worse is that his sexist ideology has apparently gotten worse over the years, because as previously mentioned, these “ha ha girls don’t understand games” moments did not exist at all in the manga. This is brand new sexism for him, and it has happened multiple times now. This is not—or at least, it cannot be believed to be—an accident.

I interpreted it more as a tongue-in-cheek look at how the popularity of a real-life game (Pokémon Go) has pretty much mimicked the popularity of YGO’s in-universe game (Duel Monsters), what with how people are going crazy over it and even getting injured in real life because of it. But I can see how you got your interpretation.

And that interpretation explains why Mai and Isis, two Duel Monsters players (and, in the case of Mai, a competitive gamer) in-universe, are confused and distressed over Pokémon Go … how, exactly?

If anything, if Takahashi wanted to depict everyone ditching Duel Monsters for Pokémon Go, then he should have had them all ditch their Duel Disks and cards in favor of cell phones, and perhaps have non-duelists (such as Isono and Kaiba’s other staff members) act as the ones being confused and distressed over what is happening. By having both Mai and Isis, the only two women in the Battle City finalists group, be the ones who are confused and distressed over Pokémon Go—and, in Mai’s case, seemingly not even understand what Pokémon is—the message that is sent is very, very clear. There is no excusing this, no matter how far someone reaches to try and find an explanation that doesn’t admit to Takahashi’s blatant sexism in his recent work (because remember, it’s not just this—it’s also the sexist stereotype he relied upon to characterize Anzu in that other official art as well).

ETA: I realize that last line might come across as a snipe toward you, and if so, I apologize. I don’t mean for it to be. I’m just really, really angry at Takahashi right now for his continued nonsense, and that’s going to bleed through into discussions I have concerning it. But I promise I’m not angry at you, and I don’t mean to snipe at you. If anything, the only person I want to snipe at is Takahashi, but I just have no way of doing that. But yeah, I didn’t mean to be a jerk toward you, so I’m sorry if I came across that way. It wasn’t intentional.

I think Kaiba forgot the part where Ishizu had him on his knees in shock during their first meeting. Also, I’m a total Silentshipper, but there is NO DENYING the chemistry between these two. Their offspring would have the most beautiful eyes.

Kaiba is apparently very good at only remembering the things he wants to. XD They really would have beautiful kids together though.
