Depression is bad and most of my plants died except for 2 so I repotted them, got 2 new plants for my hangers, and I’m trying to start a little herb garden.

Today I had a migraine but I pushed through it to do a little thing that used to make me happy. I’m just trying to get back to that headspace again, even through the pain.

Mystery Vine? How to Tell Ivy, Philodendron, and Pothos Apart

Okay, plant parents, let’s solve one of the most common houseplant mysteries. You have a beautiful trailing vine, but is it an Ivy, a Philodendron, or a Pothos? At a glance, they’re easy to mix up, but a few simple clues will make you an expert.

Look at the leaves:

  • Ivy (like English Ivy) has classic, lobed leaves with distinct points—think of the iconic ivy league symbol.
  • Philodendron (like the Heartleaf) typically has softer, thinner leaves that are heart-shaped. A new leaf grows protected inside a thin, sheath-like casing called a cataphyll.
  • Pothos (like Golden Pothos) has thicker, waxier leaves that are more irregularly shaped, often with stunning gold or white variegation. New leaves unfurl from the previous leaf’s stem, no sheath.

Why it matters: Their care is slightly different! Pothos are the most drought-tolerant. Philodendrons appreciate a bit more humidity. Ivies often like it cooler. Knowing who you have means you can give it the perfect care to thrive. Still staring at your vine, scratching your head? Snap a clear picture! Our AI Plant Finder can analyze the leaf shape and growth pattern to give you a confident ID in seconds.
