Relationships: Kayla and Damian

I was going to talk about this as part of ch2, but upon further reflection, it should probably be its own thing.

This isn’t primarily going to be about changes. It’s more about criticizing the relationship these two characters are shown to have and how it’s treated by the narrative. Specifically, regarding the treatment of sexual harassment. (I do have a couple simple changes I’ll mention at the end, though.)

The first crucial thing to know is that what makes something sexual harassment isn’t the nature of the action itself, but how it affects the victim. It’s one thing that makes it difficult to recognize and stop, because everyone’s boundaries are different and can change over time. This is why talking about boundaries is important, as is respecting them once they’re made known.

Damian does sexually harass Kayla.

If you didn’t see that, I don’t blame you. I didn’t either until I’d given it a couple reads, because it was treated like silly flirting and not a potentially traumatizing thing to do to someone. Because of this, it sucks that I have to explain this in the first place, but apparently I do.

Really, you only need to know two things to get what’s going on here. First, that Kayla’s afraid of Damian. I’ve heard the argument that she’s being prejudiced here because she’s religious and he’s a demon, but… for one thing, the only source on Kayla being very devout is Damian himself, and he’s probably an unreliable source since he’s presumably only started going to ZPA that year (meaning they’ve only known each other for a few months at most) and given how scared she is of him, I can’t imagine they spent much time getting to know each other since then.

Also, she usually has impressive courage. She threatened a vampire with her fencing sword to save Zill and nearly got mauled, and fought a giant monster with the rest of her friends to protect Jack. But defending oneself from a creepy guy is a different kind of danger, and one that can ruin a woman’s life if when people take his side. It’s not unreasonable for someone to be more afraid of a harasser than a monster.

To put it another way, Kayla chooses the bear.

Not to mention that it’s probably not hard to guess that Zill’s at least part demon, based on his… everything. She’s not scared of demons, she’s dating one.

The second thing to know is that this has been going on for a while. In one panel, Damian complains about Kayla’s reaction, saying that she does this every time.

That is what makes this sexual harassment. If Damian’s flirting was something that he did once and made her uncomfortable, that’s an honest mistake. It’s probably how all this started, too. He wouldn’t have known where her boundaries were yet, and the obvious solution would be for him to apologize and then stop the behavior.

But instead he just… kept fucking doing it??? To the point that Kayla feels so threatened by him that she runs away when he talks to her?

Nope. Nuh uh. No way. That is NOT okay to do to someone. Now that they’re at the point where Kayla feels like she has to physically move away from him to feel safe when he gives her any attention, and because Damian knows that’s what her reaction will be to his actions, he’s only making her more afraid of him. And what’s more, having the knowledge of how his behavior affects her shows that he’s doing it on purpose.

There are many other examples of why Damian’s treatment of her are toxic as hell and on a personal level I absolutely hate him. And I’m honestly tired of all the people I’ve seen who don’t recognize his actions for something as damaging as they actually are. How he behaves toward her isn’t cute or wholesome or romantic, and her reaction isn’t funny.

He clearly wasn’t meant to be written this way. I think the audience is supposed to like him, but trying to make a character likable after they’ve committed SH is like trying to make a character sympathetic when they’ve done a hate crime.

The last thing I want to mention was actually the thing that originally made me dislike Damian. Admittedly, it took multiple readings to see his harassment problem, but this told me he had a severely disrespectful view of Kayla right out of the gate.

It’s this one line at the beginning of the 2nd chapter, when Damian is talking to Jack about his chances with Kayla. According to Damian: “Religious girls are just a challenge, but they always give in to temptation in the end.”

I hate this so much, it’s hard to decide which reason why to explain first. So let’s go through this sentence piece by piece.

“Religious girls…”

First of all, as I’ve explained, Damian probably isn’t the best source on this. Kayla being Christian is canon, but considering she’s dating a half-demon, I’d argue that she isn’t that strictly devout.

Secondly, grouping Kayla with all religious girls is generalization. Not a way you think of someone who’s uniquely special to you. Each girl is their own person, grouping a bunch of them together and labeling them with certain behaviors is at best rude and at worst misogynistic. “White girls like X” “Queer girls like Y” “Religious girls are like Z” See the pattern here?

Also, by not treating Kayla like an individual here, the connotation of this is that she’s replaceable. Like she’s the “religious girl” who happens to have his attention at the moment but he could find another just like her if he wanted.

“…are just a challenge…”

To start, there’s the dehumanization/objectification of referring to another person as a “challenge”. It also contributes to the implication of Kayla’s replaceability.

There’s also implications about how he formed this opinion. Taken in context with the full sentence, it suggests that Kayla isn’t the first religious girl that Damian has tried to seduce, meaning that when he says this, he’s comparing her to the rest of them.

If you know anything about women, you’ll know that comparing us to each other is kind of a faux pas.

“….but they always give in to temptation in the end.”

This is the worst part of all, starting with how it suggests that Damian has no intentions to stop treating Kayla the way he does. It speaks to his certainty that if he just keeps at it, she’ll change her mind about him.

That has the same logic as guys who keep sending women unsolicited photos, thinking that eventually one of them will see it and think: “I must have you now.”

(Yeah. Damian in his current form is a fedora guy.)

It also hints at Damian’s belief that Kayla should “give in to temptation,” that it’s only what’s right and best for her. Which is why I think it’s rich that Damian (accurately) calls Zill a show-off, implying that he acts arrogant, and then he himself behaves in the same way but with a touch of degradation mixed in.

This “I know better than you” attitude, especially toward someone he probably doesn’t know well yet, is incredibly entitled.

I could go on and on, and in fact, a lot of this analysis was pulled from a much longer essay I wrote a while back (I’m using it because it’s relevant here and it’s easier than rephrasing everything that’s the same points anyway). But there are a couple changes I’m planning to make that might just fix this mess.

The first thing to know, and you might be surprised to hear this, is that Damian still flirts with Kayla in the rewrite. It’s what the creator wanted to happen, because he has a crush on her, so it stays.

But! One crucial change is their history with each other. In the rewrite, Kayla and Damian are friends. Him realizing his crush on her was a recent development, and they had built a foundation of friendship through Jack before he decided to act on it.

This new context changes the dynamics of this situation. Having built a foundation of trust, Kayla’s boundaries are different than when they were near-strangers. She now knows that Damian’s harmless (in this rewrite he is relatively harmless, especially to her) and that his advances aren’t a potential threat to her safety.

In the rewrite, Kayla’s opinion here is that his flirting sways between an inside joke and a mild annoyance. He still gets on her nerves sometimes, but we all have flaws.

(If I were to go farther with this, I’d make them gal pals who share gossip and confide secrets in each other, but perhaps that’s the kind of thing their relationship could evolve into in the future. For now, it seems like too big a change)

A lot about their relationship will be affected by changes to Damian’s character, which I’ll put on his profile of changes.

[ and so, I need to write about this somewhere, I have no one to express my idea to, there is a small audience here, I think it’s possible ]

The other day, I realized that my alternate Undertale universe (EverTale) needed an update.

Let’s start with the old plot, which had a ton of flaws. The story was about a boy named Frisk who ventured into a dungeon. According to legend, the weakest monsters were locked there, having lost the war with humans due to their weakness.

The first path is pacifist, just like in the original game, but I have the good spirit Chara (Frisk has the soul of kindness), who accompanies Frisk the entire way, and also Flow, who isn’t Asriel. Regarding Asriel, he was in the first chapters of my story, but I didn’t think about how he would develop in the future, so I removed him.

Frisk defeats all the monsters and returns to the surface. Then comes the true ending, where Frisk repeatedly commits gen@cide against monsters, but all the monsters retain memories of their previous resets. Thanks to these resets, Frisk becomes stronger and stronger, and then four of the strongest heroes—Art, Nerror, the Creator, and Amanda—stand against him. After the battle, Art and the Creator d#ie, but they manage to wound Frisk, and he retreats forever.

>>A little about the characters Art and Nerror are skeletons, two Sanses, roughly speaking, they love each other.

The Creator was my OC.

Asanda, the Creator’s friend, is also my friend in real life.

And so, after the death of friends, those who survived go to another AU (my friend’s AU) and start living there anew.

Undyne was also supposed to d#ie along this path, but the idea was that her love, Alphys, would have time to take a tiny fragment of her scale, allowing Undyne to be resurrected. After her resurrection, she would interact with Nerror frequently and support him, as he began to go crazy with longing for his beloved.

2) The story was ending. But then I decided to extend it. So, after losing his loved one, Nerror, a skeleton without magic but with strong physical strength, begins traveling the AU in search of Frisk to take revenge. Along the way, he encounters problems that plague both himself and his physical body, cracking. He descends into madness and decides to commit suicide at home, but Undyne and Alphys find him and help him improve his condition. End.

3) NEW VERSION 2026

The new version is poorly finished, but I will say that now EverTale is truly ever, because the talk will be about eternity, which the main character must overthrow through bloodshed. Yes, it’s vague, but that’s it.

Thanks for reading this, I’d be happy to discuss it with anyone. I translated it through a translator lol, I’m too lazy to write such a huge text without it.

got done watching the episode of Hunting Party where Elizabeth Gillies starred in, loved it. Mainly bc I love anything she stars in, and she was the only reason i started this show in the first place.

But anyway, it got me craving a similar plot.

Maybe two murderesses escape prison after it was b**med or whatever, but they get their prison break and they spent the last two months free alone, maybe fighting the urge to k*ll again but it’s also been years since they’ve been out in the free world so they have to adjust.

And just them finding eachother bc they know little info about one another and wanted to see if they were alive or not and if they could even find eachother. And you got the one who is wanting to continue k** agaain and the one whos a little more reformed… or whatever I DUNNO JUST GIMME

Here’s a fun plot idea:

I was playing ‘part of your world’ song from The little mermaid, when the idea came to mind.

The plot’s about obviously a mermaid who falls in love with a Hunter, and that hunter is just continuing the family business because he had a guardian/parental figure who was a hunter as well but died at sea. This guardian/parental figure is a notorious hunter of mermaids who collects their scales/tails like trophies, he kills mermaids for fun, not for survival, but for Fun. Now, that is where our mermaid comes in, she is the one that killed the guardian/parental figure of the Hunter for survival, because if she didn’t stop him then she and her entire family would’ve been wiped out and displayed as trophies.

But, both of them does not know that the other is kinda related to that mermaid killer or that the other is the one that killed their parent figure, so this is the part where the wicked witch comes in, the mermaid gets curious of the upper world and heard rumours of a witch that can grant any wish a creature could want. Her family warns her of the dangers that could do but she ignores them, like her curiosity got the better of her, she wants to know why, why do humans hunt them down when there are fish for food, do they not have their own food supply?

So she goes to the witch to grant this wish of hers, the witch grants it but it has a catch, she has to make a person fall in love with her if she wants to live before the blue moon (which is 4 months away), if not she would turn into sea foam (Same one from the original little mermaid) so she goes to land and sees how chaotic it is, and she emerges from the sea all naked, like same with ariel, but she has no fish, crab, or seagull friend to help her, because in her world those are food. So she just hides under the docks all naked and cold and doesn’t know what to do.

Thankfully, there is a kind woman who sees her under the docks, because people are starting to talk about a girl that suddenly appeared out of nowhere and is eating raw crab and fish and just crawls around, so this woman just takes her in and is a owner of a small inn at the port, and this inn is where the Hunter requently visits, so this is where they meet, since he is a regular and is kinda close with the owner, she introduces them them eachother, first it was kinda platonic, but then the mermaid gets an idea that she could make him fall for her so that she could live, so she starts to court him the mermaid way, like giving him prettiest seashells she could find and gives him the biggest catch.

At first he found it weird and kinda cute? But he starts to fall as well, and boom, they hit it off. He shows her around the port and introduces her to his crew. They returned to the inn where they have a fun night, and start to talk to eachother about themselves, recalling their pasts to eachother and just opening up. But then she mentions about a hunter that used to haunt them and just kills off her kind and collects one of their precious items, she doesn’t say what, and he starts to get more curious about her past, like he wants to know more.

But the mermaid forgets a crucial part of the contract, every full moon when the light of the moon shines on her, she would have parts pf her body revert back into her marmaid form, like when the moon light hits her arm her scales and claws would start to show, like she forgets that very crucial part. And that night was a full moon, some of the light kinda shined on her face and it revealed the scales on her face, not her full face but some parts like around her forehead or temple, but didn’t put to mind thinking he was just seeing things.

A few days after that, the Hunter asked her if she wanted to see something and wanted to show her what he does for a living, he shows her his parent figures collection, his parent figures 'trophies’ as he says, the mermaid gets scared as she realizes that He is related to that hunter she killed many years ago, she plays it safe, but is nervous as she is surrounded by dead carcasses of her kind. The Hunter explained that he hunted them down because of how beautiful their scales are, the mermaid asked not for food? The Hunter replied no, they have livestock for that or fish.

That’s when the mermaid realized that he is also the same as his parent figure, cruel and cold hearted, they never see mermaids as living beings, but as things that can be turned into a thing for display. So she starts to panic and thinks of going back to the sea, but she can’t tell him that she is leaving or her new found mother. So she leaves quietly, the Hunter searched for her for days, until her found her near the beach in the next town from the port looking helpless as she doesn’t know what to do because she can’t go back to the sea. He asks her why she left, she couldn’t asnwer him, they began to have a confrontation, then she falls down because the moonlight shined on her turning her back to full on mermaid form.

The Hunter is shocked then everything in his mind connected, from that night, her way of showing love, how she looked so pale and scared when he showed her his parent figures collection and ran away. He asked her why she didn’t tell him, that he would’ve accepted her. She answered 'Would it stop you from hunting my kind?’ He didn’t answer. She couldn’t help but sob. Then the Hunter remembered her saying about a hunter that she encountered, he asked her about the hunter. It was her turn to stay silent. He understood that it was his parent figure that she killed.

Disbelief, Shock, and Anger consumed him and grabbed his pistol from his belt and pointed at her, but didn’t fire his gun. 'I didn’t have a choice!’ She pleaded him. 'I would allow you to escape, consider yourself lucky, but if you cross paths with me again, I would not hesitate to turn your beautiful treasure into a display.’ Then he fired his gun to the sand near her tail scaring her, she quickly crawls to the sea and disappears in the waves. His words were filled with hate, but his eyes were filled with tears of despair not for his parent figure, but for her because he lost her. He couldn’t kill her because his love for her was greater, so he let her go, because if she didn’t then one of his men that he saw near the edge of the beach would have killed her.

He knew that he was being trailed so to protect her, he lied and let her go.

So, that’s the plot came into my mind and just wanted to share. If you like to write it into a one-shot or a series please tag me, I would love to read it. Thank you!

Character Changes: Cameron

(I’ll be using the title page of the comic for examples whenever I can)

My biggest issue with her is very simple.

*deep breath*

She.

Does!

NOTHING!

Well, actually, that’s not totally fair. She does do some things. My issue here is that those things might affect her personally, but have almost zero impact on anyone else. She’s supposed to be the main character, but she’s almost completely irrelevant. The only time she affects anything at all is in chapter 4, and it wouldn’t be hard to edit her out. Off the top of my head, he could be explaining his story to someone new he’s met and they could give him the same advice she did.

Do that and she could be removed from the story without a bump. Nothing would happen differently.

She is so significant she doesn’t even get her own character sheet! (Most of the rest of the main cast does, I’ll be using them in the future)

Basically, she spends all her time just being around and acting scared. Her purpose as a character just seems to be witnessing everything that’s happening and reacting to it. It seems a lot like she’s only part of the story so that it can have the whole “human ends up in a magical world by accident” plot. Which is not a prerequisite for stories that involve magic, by the way.

Maybe she’s supposed to exist as a stand-in that represents the audience? But then shouldn’t she be actively trying to learn more about this world instead of (for the most part) letting information come to her? That’s what the audience wants to do, they want to hear the story, so if she represents them, she needs to have motivation to seek that story out for herself.

Also. If she wants to go home, shouldn’t she be trying to figure out how to leave? It feels like she accepted being trapped way too quickly. Does she actually want to stay there, even though she’s afraid of everyone? Even if she did have a way out?

Actually, that’s another big issue: we don’t know this person. We don’t know about her family, history, what she cares about, her dreams for her life, anything. KayCee mentioned she had a degree in counseling as if she’d just noticed that. Does Cameron have a degree in another subject? Is counseling actually her secondary career? Is she just so desperate for a job that she’d accept one in a field she isn’t as interested in as her other career?

And why is she so desperate for work? Is she struggling to make ends meet, or does she have debts? Actually, that would make her apparently having a guaranteed place to stay in Safe Haven really interesting to look at with her character, because it would mean one less expense for her to worry about.

And also? She has no personality. Her entire personality is just being afraid. I get why she would be scared a lot of the time under the current circumstances, but it would have been better to get a better look at what she’s like on a normal day. Her job interview doesn’t really count because she was clearly very stressed, and wouldn’t have been acting normal then, either.

It might actually be fortunate that we know so little about her, because giving her depth will mostly be an additive process, rather than having to deal with character traits that blatantly contradict each other (but we’ll get to those characters later).

So, now for some changes.

This is the first of several characters that I’m basically building from the ground up, but it especially sucks to have to do it for a main character. I know that this project is meant to be my interpretation of another creator’s goals, but in this case, there’s a lot that I’ll just have to make up myself.

At her core, Cameron is selfless and altruistic. She wants to improve other people’s lives, it’s one of her personal goals. She also has a strong sense of responsibility, which becomes clearer once she becomes the guidance counselor at ZPA, when she becomes responsible for helping students with their problems.

Normally, she’s very outgoing (she used to have a lot of friends in her previous life) but her irrational fear makes it hard for her to make new friends in Safe Haven. As I’ve mentioned, a crucial change to the story is that Cameron tries to cover up her fear because she doesn’t trust anybody enough to be open about it at first. And she’s actually really good at it! A couple hints sneak through, but they can usually be chalked up to other explanations.

How is she able to do this so well? Hold onto your hats and glasses, folks, our gal’s getting backstory. She’s good at hiding her true feelings because in her former life she was — drumroll — an actress.

See, Cameron was once part of a popular theater group in Seattle, and she had a lot of friends that were fellow performers. One day, she got a job appearing in a commercial, which would be her first appearance on TV. It looked like all the cards were in her favor.

Only problem was, part of the commercial’s gimmick involved a trained monkey.

Cameron actually got through it okay, but the production crew threw a party afterwards for everyone involved (yes, including the monkey), and while she was there, one of her more unkind coworkers got the monkey to climb onto her head. When Cam realized what had happened, she panicked and threw it across the room.

Someone got it on video and it went viral, the trainer sued Cameron because their monkey was injured, she became so hated by the public that they did re-shoots of the commercial so she wouldn’t be in it, and long story short, her career as a performer was essentially ruined.

Not only did she not get her big break, but nobody wanted to hire her when she had a reputation of animal cruelty, and even random people knew her solely for this incident. Even her friends turned against her. It was bad.

Now desperate for money (most actors aren’t financially stable at the best of times and the lawsuit didn’t help), Cameron went to a hiring agency looking for work.

And we know what happened from there. But basically, this is why she was so desperate for a job, to the point that she did zero due diligence about her new position.

She’s still in therapy in this version, but it’s mostly to talk with someone about the public shaming she’s experienced. And she has degrees in both counseling and acting, but it was just the former one that was relevant to her new job. Cameron chose to study counseling in addition to acting because she liked the idea of being able to help people in that way, and she wanted to have more diverse skills in case her plan to be an actress didn’t work out (which turned out to be a good call).

Cameron also doesn’t have any family to speak of; her dad left her mother before she was born, she has no siblings, her mother has since died, and she doesn’t have any friends anymore, and she’s not in a romantic relationship. Which is why she’s pretty okay with cutting all ties to her previous life — she doesn’t have anyone to stay for.

Other than that info, she really just needs to be more involved in the plot. Here’s how I vaguely imagine that will happen.

Chapter 1: Mostly the same, except for her behavior, and her fear will be mostly shown through internal thinking. Move around some info dumps to put the more relevant information about Safe Haven first. We shouldn’t be learning the name of the city in chapter 3. At the end, have a minute where Cameron is on her own and struggles with whether she can actually survive like this or whether she should just try to run for it. She decides to stay in the end because she feels she has no other choice.

Chapter 2: Main conflict is Cameron coming to terms with the fact that the only person who felt “safe” to her (Jackie) actually wasn’t. She also comes face-to-face with Venganza and discovers that Jackie and the other animals (mostly the students) truly have her back.

Chapter 3: Cameron spends some time getting to know Fabian outside work (she’s trying to overcome her fear since they keep bumping into each other and she doesn’t want to accidentally show that she’s scared of him). They encounter Damian, and together help him hide from spies sent by his father.

Chapter 4: Cameron and Jack talk about their pasts and we see flashbacks going into more detail about the backstory that I described for her, and some parts of her past that explain why she has zoophobia in the first place. The two stories are opposites of each other because Jack’s describes how he formed relationships with people he loved, and Cameron’s is about how she lost the relationships with all the people she was close with. In the end, she tells Jack her secret.

Chapter 5: Jack invites Cameron to go out with his friends to visit the cultural district, as a way of helping her get comfortable with the city. Addison and his friends happen to go there at the same time. Cameron and Addison accidentally get separated from their respective groups and run into each other. Cameron finds out during their time together that Addison has deep-seated traumas and is sometimes just as scared as her.

Some of the details of these might change, and these aren’t complete chapter descriptions, but those are some ideas for her to have larger contributions to the plot. I also left out most of the parts where Cameron passively receives information — for instance, one idea for chapter 3 is that she and Fabian encounter one of the vampires and interrogate them about how they ended up in the city.

Needless to say, you’ll be seeing a lot of her in the notes about plot changes.

That’s all for now!

So, I never watched the show above.  The ‘elevator death’ episode came out in March 1991 and I was 10.  I did hear shows having surprise deaths as I grew up and people usually referenced this event.  Not to mention it made a lot of people terrified of stepping onto an elevator too early even if they hadn’t seen the episode.  Guess this is the 1990’s version of ‘Final Destination’ where you get…

The night was silent and void of the moon, much like his thoughts. Raiden couldn’t think, a scowl settling on his maw.

So he stood, his back to the shoreline, his expression unreadable. Clutched in his talons was a crumpled letter, belonging to Mariko’s new precious horde. There was nothing in particular that stood out about this one. Contained inside was a humble greeting, hopes of seeing one another, and a promise. He grimaced. The realistic part of himself wanted her to stop any hope of fulfilling such a request, but Raiden didn’t have the heart to tell her otherwise.

A harsh gust tossed and turned the grass and trees, bowing from the force.

He was upset. A sudden thought came to mind, and he instantly shoved it further into the furthest recesses of his mind. Shame filled him, threatening to boil over.

Why? Why must she always-

He heard the water first, the familiar sounds of a slow rippling tide, then a shadow looming over him.

“Mo'o.” Plainly stated, hollow as he felt now. He didn’t turn to face her as she breached the surface. Now he did, out of politeness, and instantly regretted it.

The Gyarados’ face was filled with concern as she approached the shore. Did she know what he was thinking? “Raiden. You are isolating yourself… again.” She added more quietly at the end. “Do you not feel the urge to reach out and speak with me when you are troubled like this?”

“I can handle it myself.” Like he always had done.

Resting her claws in the sand, Mo'o said, “But you are no longer alone.”

She always did this, used words and a soothing voice to beckon him.

Raiden shook his head. “Why?”

“Why…?”

Raiden scowled. “Why do you care so much?” His face was as turbulent as the wind beginning to stir around them. “You should stick to what you promised me and nothing more.” Power to face what may come in the future.

She flinched, “Raiden.” She inhaled, her expression becoming more resolute. “This is what you need as well. Come here.” She made a gesture with her claw.

Begrudingly, he stepped forward until they were mere inches apart. “What is it?”

“Listen.”

“I’m-”

“Truly listen to.” She leaned in close. “Raiden… Are you jealous?” Mo'o asked tentatively.

His lip rose silently into a snarl, “I met others to talk to, as she did. Why would I?”

“That does not answer me.”

He snorted, averting his face from her. “…Maybe I was,” he admitted quietly. Mariko was at her most radiant that evening. He had never seen her so happy, except in her younger days; when she was a small chick, she followed his every move.

Slow down, brother! I wanna swim with you!

To see her happily conversing with others, strangers, with ease, while he struggled, he felt a disgusting sensation shove its way down his throat. And he didn’t know why.

“I don't… know. I should be happy for her. She’s able to talk to others.” He kept remembering the way she chimed happily, so fondly of this Goomy in particular that listened to her plights. He growled in the back of his throat, wings in the air. “It should have been me. She should have told me these things that bothered her! Not these nobodies who have no place in her life!”

Mo'o looked at him gravely. “Would you have listened to her? Would you have opened your ears, your heart, if you hadn’t attended the festivities with her?”

He faltered. He didn’t want to think of the possibilities if he hadn’t left with her.

“So now you understand.” Mo'o smiled widely. “Both of you opened your hearts to others other than each other.”

“You smile like this is a good thing.”

“It is!” She cradled his face, squished his cheeks. “You’re still young, my child. Fending for yourself and your sister at quite a young age. Younger than you should have. This pursuit of power, you believe you need, is merely a step. You need to grow first before you properly fill the role you desire.”

Raiden huffed. He batted her claws away with a brush of the wing. “Easy for you to say.” At her raised brow, he groused, “You had an easier time. A god’s blessing, I take it?”

“I did not. You understand, correct…? I was once a Magikarp. Very weak. Maybe you know of them?”

Who didn’t? He used to hunt down a few that washed ashore. “I didn’t know you came from a Magikarp.”

“Yes. I was a small one,” she said. “Hardly worth the time for anyone to snack on. But I was quick, I was smart. I never let anyone know where I was, and I could escape before anyone knew I was there. The local god took notice. He gave me a test, believing I would succeed, and I became as you know me now.”

“I-I… ” He was lost for words.

“It was what I earned for the trial and merit. I wish..” She sighed. “This duty has left me somewhat isolated. I see you two struggle, and I want better for you both. I want you and Mariko to thrive. You are too young to seek this strength you want so quickly. You have yet to enjoy the joys youth has to offer you. I want this for you. You both.”

Raiden appeared torn. “Why?”

Mo'o cocked her head. “It’s natural to see young children want them to prosper?” She hesitated, clasping her claws together. “Like children, I never had.”

His eyes flashed, his expression grew hardened. “I’m not your child.”

She reeled back. “No, no. You are not but… it doesn’t stop the urge…”

He turned his back to her. “You don’t need to concern yourself with us like that.” Before she could say more, he took off to the skies, a flash of lightning coursing in his wake.

She sighed, watching his shadow. “We have a long way to go…”

It Was Only A Dream

South Park
This is a very common ending that I’m sure all of us have encountered.  After all of the events, the main character wakes up and it’s revealed to have been a dream.  I believe this was the ending for ‘Newhart’ and it also makes me think of ‘Wizard of Oz’.  From what I can tell, there are two uses for this trope:

Having everything be a dream comes as a shock ending. The audience is…

CH1 START 07 | maybe more. imagine.

“ALRIGHT, well. Step one is sorted.”

She sounds nonchalant.

“ANYWAY, I have a lot of clean-up to do. YOU, GRIMSBY, you’re BULLY now. Except. I don’t know. You can have your own name. Feels too weird to just recycle that. Consider it a blessing!”

…GRIMSBY, then, now has… SCUTTLE’s lanyard on their neck…. Only … you don’t think their name is SCUTTLE anymore. It’s BULLY…

“Alright, alright. They know diddly-shit about this place, so you’ll talk to them about it, right? I knew I should have looked at you all before that… ugh… whatever… no-net… no take backsies… that’s doing it live for you.”

She sighs.

“Anyway, AS I WAS SAYING, you all have some tasks in your crew rooms. Some now a little different, HEE-HEE! Be a dear and work on that as I fix this mess, okay? And, well. As they say! Welcome home!”

With that, everything goes black.

And the next thing you remember, you’re sitting in the middle of….

Some kind of break room.

Surrounded by four others.

CH1 START.

CH1 START 06 | recast.

PRIX does not wait for a response.

The PROUDLE DARE lights flash – a huge X appearing over the brown haired person’s podium, and a large check mark over SCUTTLE’s.

“THAAAAT’S RIGHT! BULLY!”

She’s laughing.

“…You’re so dead! You’re deader than a doorknob! You knew that, right! And you can’t have died and be here! That wouldn’t be fair, you know! Would cause a lot of issues! I’m telling you!”

“So sad, so true. It was SOO great to have you, I hope you all had a lot of fun with – oh – I don’t remember her deal – because them’s the ropes!”

And with a snap of her fingers….

An anvil crashes down on SCUTTLE’s head, almost like in a cartoon.

But unlike in a cartoon, there’s a sickening crunch.

CH1 START 04 | bojack horseman voice

“You guys get the picture, right? There’s no way in or out.  Oh, you can scream, you can call 911, you can pray to whatever god you might believe in – but no one’s coming to save you.  The only thing that could possibly get you out is by killing one of your natural born enemies, or pleasing me, personally, so much by suiting up, causing drama, and following my orders.  The natural born enemies I, by the way, so helpfully placed you away from, so you can work with your allies to get out.  Aren’t I so fucking nice?”

Uh.  No?

“Alright, that wraps us up, right? I did, like, such a good job of explaining that. No more kinks, no more issues, pretty comprehensive, right?”

Why is she– nevermind.

“Anyway, I also have a few tasks for you in your crew rooms, think of them as ice-breakers! We’re going to get so, so acquainted with each other – you’ll love it, until, of course, you get slaughtered. Hee-hee!”

“Speaking of, I really can’t fucking stand these lights, show’s over, right? I’ll whisk you away in a minute, but let me get a closer look at you… I like to see my prey before I send them off to play!”

She snaps her fingers. The lights return to normal – the theater now well-lit.

…And PRIX looks at all of you pleasantly until….

Her eyes….

Lock on SCUTTLE’S.

And a look of shock takes over.

“Oh. Um. What– what are YOU doing HERE?”
