A guide to Cusco, Peru: where ancient history meets modern-day magic. 💫
I had a brief but wonderful visit to Cusco last year during my Amazon canoe expedition, and I can’t wait to get back one of these days. Here are my recommended activities!
👟 Get oriented at San Blas Viewpoint, one of the many walkable viewpoints overlooking the city.
🔔 Get centered in the Plaza de Armas, the city’s picturesque central square. 🍽️ Get stuffed at Mistura Grill, an excellent modern Peruvian restaurant with perfect plaza views.
🥐 Get sweet at El Bueno Pastor Panadería, a classic bakery with delicious treats located just off the Plaza de Armas. 👀 Get cultured at the Inca walls, built approximately 500 years ago and still standing strong in the city center.
🛍️ Get shopping at Centro Artesanal Cusco, and bring home textiles, alpaca wool products, and more.
Pro Tip: Walking in Cusco will take your breath away - not only because it’s beautiful, but because it’s over 11,000 feet (3,402 meters) in elevation… and there are a lot of stairs. 🤣

A story recently published with the Huffington Post “How Harris County, Texas, the execution capital of the country, sends poor people to death row. I photographed portraits of Obel Cruz-Garcia who was sentenced to death in 2013 for killing a six-year-old boy, a crime he maintains he did not commit.
He was appointed a lawyer named Skip Cornelius, who failed to do basic defense work on the case and met his client only a handful of times outside of the courtroom. On almost every day of Cruz-Garcia’s death penalty trial, Cornelius billed multiple hours to other cases. Cruz-Garcia is now represented by excellent post-conviction lawyers who have done the research and investigation Cornelius should have done — showing how competent legal defense likely would have persuaded jurors to spare Cruz-Garcia’s life.
I also photographed renowned Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis who has spent decades fighting to improve the county’s indigent defense system.

Rosetta, a small ferry crossing the Nile river. Really proud that my story about the Delta of the Nile, a political and social frontline of Egypt, has been published by #rhythmsmagazine of Taipei. Rosetta, now a sleeping town, was famous for the Rosetta Stone, key to deciphering the Egyptian scripts. #onassignment @sipausa. As a photojournalist, witnessing the struggles of sub-Saharan immigrants in Tunisia has been personally impactful. The fact that dozens of them are living on the streets with limited opportunities is disheartening. I feel a responsibility to document their experiences and shine a light on the challenges they face, while advocating for their protection and rights. More support for these individuals is urgently needed, and we must prioritize their safety and well-being.
