Iditarod Trail Mural, Seward, 2025.
The ceremonial beginning of the 2026 Iditarod dog sled race is today in Anchorage, and the actual 1600 km (1000 mile) race will begin tomorrow in Willow. A venerable trail, the Iditarod gained fame when in 1925 an outbreak of diphtheria in Nome required the rapid delivery of serum to alleviate the disease. In winter it was impossible to reach Nome rapidly by sea, and thus the serum was delivered overland from southern Alaska using dog sleds for much of the difficult midwinter run.
Seward, a year-round port with a rail connection, completed in 1923, to Anchorage received the serum delivered by sea, shipping it onward to Anchorage where the dog sled transport commenced.
