Shower Bath
1917
George Bellows

This scene is depicting his stay at the YMCA when he first arrived in New York in 1904, after dropping out of Ohio State at the end of his senior year to pursue a career as an artist.

During a period of time when indoor plumbing was still the exception in private residences - public bathhouses, especially at the YMCA ( where a man could also find lodging and a hot meal ) were places many gentlemen visited regularly for practical reasons. One can easily see why the atmosphere in them was so alluring to homosexual men.
