Ok the wider internet isn’t supper helpful so I figured I’d ask Tumblr: what Linux distro do you recommend for when I inevitably switch? For context I don’t know much about computers at least yet so I’ll want to use one of the more beginner-friendly ones. I hate Windows because it’s owned by an evil corporation that wants my data (and also isn’t very customizable).

had fun with our first true manual nixos install + flake

running XFS under kernver 7.0-rc2 with a custom nvidia driver patch

we were silly enough to back up all of our game configs….. and forgot to backup our entire flake directory. luckily we remembered after commiting to repartitioning but before the data was gone. good practice for data recovery!

The update no one asked for on my secondary SSD.

I have an Arch installation on my secondary that I am setting up trying (and failing) to get Niri to work on. (No, I’m not asking for help.)

But, hey, at least I can browse I was having fun browsing my files in Lf and looking things up in Links (2… 3 4). Yeah, I stole the joke, but we’re having fun and that joke (which I saw 4 years late) got me into a band my dad is a fan of, but I never actually got into myself. I also set up Greetd with TUIGreeter.

(I’m going to change the text frequently)

P.S. - If I put the letter, “d,” at the end of something that doesn’t have a, “d,” at the end, can we just pretend it’s a joke about Systemd rather than my inability to type?

it’s been three days that there is only sunshine and rainbows, fresh fruits growing next to my window, unicornies now living in my garden, fairies glimmering in my room.

Need some help from linux people - I’m switching from kubuntu to debian on my desktop because I hate all the bloat kubuntu came with. What desktop environment should I use? Preferably not KDE because that’s what I’m currently using, but something like it. I prefer more windows style than mac style looks. XFCE looks the most promising, but I know it can be a bit more difficult to customize. I’m not opposed to that, though

Totally officially real account of dash, your friendly neighbourhood POSIX shell. Better performance for scripts, better portability (POSIX), and much smaller size than your other $SHELL. Switch to dash for /bin/sh today!

Yes, “dash shell” is like “atm machine” is like “chai tea”. Gotta scrounge for urls these days…

Filtering?

A screenshot of a terminal running the debian almquist shell. A variable called "greetings" is made with value "Hello Dash!". The echo command is used to print the variable's message.ALT

System btw:

  • artix linux w/ dinit, river + sandbar
  • ironically, not using dash

Starting a new series: Today I Learned As a Baby Linux User

You can open applications just by typing the name of the application in the terminal :o

Genuinely wanna test it out when turning on the computer because my taskbar takes like a year to launch lmao

(I set extra mouse buttons + Kwin thingy to open the terminal but that might not work so I could just set the terminal to launch with the computer because things that launch first launch before the taskbar loads, I disabled most applications from doing that because I hate being bombarded with applications like they’re popups whenever I turn the thing on)

(I wonder if I used a bad ISO when installing CachyOS because I noticed it taking a long time to load in the installer too, but I don’t have the same problem on my laptop which I also have CachyOS on with KDE Plasma - honestly I don’t care enough to reinstall it because I’ve spent so much time messing with Kwin stuff and I don’t want to do the whole file transfer + reinstalling games song and dance again)

Hello lovely Linux (Mint) understanders in my computer idrk what this shit is or which bit I need to modify. When partitioning the drive at install I didn’t touch anything I just went w what came up. Previously I was using Windows 10. I partitioned to keep all the documents etc on my hard drive (as a just in case. It’s all on a USB as well but I couldn’t quite bring myself to wipe it clean), so ig that’s all sitting on the partitioned bit (along w all the microsoft/windows bloat ig?)one

I downloaded GParted bc I saw someone on the Mint forums suggested it but idk which bits I need to move or how much

I assume the larger one (ending 1p3) is the windows partition and I can move that over a fair bit, and the smaller one (ending 1p5) is what Linux is running on? idk what the other bits are
