I’m spending a lot more time on LinkedIn after being unceremoniously laid off from the company that I gave 18 years of my life to. Some of the posts are useful, but others just make me grind my teeth.
First of all - why are “influencers” using 1980s car ad tactics? There’s nothing that makes me scroll faster than seeing a (touched-up, possibly AI-generated) picture of a conventionally beautiful woman - theoretically the woman who owns the account - on a post about literally anything other than beauty products. If you’re advertising that mascara, then fine. But I don’t need to see you looking not-so-subtly seductively at the camera when you’re just posting about the job market.
(Also, it totally creeps me out that half of these posts are on my LinkedIn feed because of one dude in particular that I followed because he was connected with some of my connections and he sent me a connection request. That was literally my first day on LinkedIn, and I now realize that’s a common tactic - he gains followers by sending connection requests to connections of connections, and all of us think that someone in our LinkedIn circle actually knows this dude. Sue me, but I come from the internet era of ‘don’t let anyone know your real name unless you actually know them IRL,’ and it’s a hard habit to break.)
The other thing that bothers me about LinkedIn?
I realize that this isn’t specific to LinkedIn.
It’s everywhere on social media.
And what is it?
It’s THIS FUCKING WRITING PATTERN.
Short, choppy sentences.
Sometimes only fragments of sentences.
And gods forbid you string two or more sentences together to make a fucking paragraph.
Is it because they’re marketing to the ADHD crowd (to which I belong, to be completely transparent) because they don’t expect any of us to be able to follow an entire paragraph before getting bored and scrolling on?
Or does it have something to do with the cadence of AI readers, and they’re all used to writing scripts for AI readers because they don’t want to record their own voices?
That is, of course, assuming it’s not AI in the first place, copying what it sees over and over again.
Anyway, it drives me fucking nuts. If I didn’t have to be on LinkedIn to get a job right now, I’d delete my account and never look back. The second I notice that the post follows this writing pattern, I scroll on, because I don’t trust that there’s an actual fucking person on the other end writing this with their own brains.
The only place I don’t run into this post pattern - and maybe it’s only because of who I follow and who they follow and reblog from - but the only place I don’t run into this pattern is tumblr, and that’s why this hellsite will always remain near and dear to me.
Never change, tumblr. I really mean that. I love you.

Hi Network, here’s my weekly recap!! I had the time of my life auditing taxes for Generic Company! There’s nothing that makes me happier than finances, so instead of going home on my agreed hours I decided to stay at the office until midnight and dedicate some time in the weekend too! At the end of the week I was let go by the company, and I’m thrilled that they’ve given me the opportunity to expand my career into new avenues #OpenToWork! Looking forward to see where this new chapter takes me!!
