I look at the videos of Ryan Hollinger from time to time, and since he recently released a video for “Keeper”, I’ll share here his review of the two “fairytale horror” movies Perkins was involved with.

It’s that time again, I was sick at the beginning of the month which means more movies!
- What Keeps You Alive
Diversity win: this Black Widow is a lesbian! A classic horror trope: stuck in the woods with your spouse that you realize you don’t actually know at all. By no means groundbreaking, but watching a sexy woman be evil always hits.

2. Keeper
I will always be an Osgood Perkins stan, he creates such a unique atmosphere no matter what he does. I was honestly expecting a bit more fear from this one due to the advertising hype, though don’t get me wrong there were some great creepy moments and cool visual effects. Worth the watch for sure if you’re down for a creepy weird time.

3. House on Haunted Hill
A classic for a reason, full of camp and great performances. Also, amazing visual effects and the best skeleton I’ve ever seen. Getting the behind the scenes info by watching the Joe Bob hosted event created an even better experience.

4. The Innkeepers
I’m a sucker for a slow burn, and the main character was so endearing to follow and truly just felt like someone I would have wanted to be friends with in college. Ti West did not disappoint with this early work, and it had laughs and scares in good measure.

5. Iron Lung
Was this the best indie horror I’ve ever seen? No. But I appreciate the hell out of it, a passion project that doesn’t feel like vanity at all, but truly just wanting to create and expand upon a story. Great visuals, genuinely enjoyable cosmic horror, and some interesting things to think about after. Glad I got to catch this one in theaters.

6. A Wounded Fawn
This image unfortunately is probably the best part of the movie. This very much felt like a college era theater production in a not great way. I saw what they were going for, but unfortunately felt very forced. There were some cool design choices and I liked the final credits scene well enough, but otherwise just not for me.

Fun fact : they tend to run into things a lot when they have the bucket on because they are legally blind in two of their eyes the golden one is the only one that has really good eyesight, but usually has their vision blocked by the bucket.

Plot
Liz and Malcolm have been dating for a year and decide to spend some romantic time in Malcolm’s cabin in the woods far away from everyone else. Seconds after arriving the mood starts shifting as Liz experiences visions and strange situations..
Opinion
Some very interesting visuals and ghost designs but pretty poor writing unfortunately. What held a lot of it back for me especially was the incredibly bizarre way everyone behaved. I was really struggling trying to make sense of all human interactions in this one, the people were completly unable to communicate in a way that was comprehensible for the audience. This is fine if you’re trying to make a character weird or eerie but sadly this also applied to the main character and that ain’t great. I didn’t love the movie- but i did enjoy the ghosts!
