Myanmar: Junta Atrocities Surge 5 Years since Coup

Concerted Global Action Needed to Reverse Human Rights, Humanitarian Catastrophe

(Tokyo) – Myanmar’s military junta has committed widespread repression and abuse in every facet of life in the country since seizing power on February 1, 2021, Amnesty International, Fortify Rights, and Human Rights Watch said today. The military’s atrocities since the coup, which include war crimes and crimes against humanity, escalated over the past year as the junta sought to entrench its rule through abusive military operations and stage-managed elections.

United Nations Security Council members, governments in the region, and other concerned states should better support Myanmar’s people and act to hold the junta accountable for its crimes. The heavily controlled elections, held in three phases between December 28, 2025, and January 25, 2026, have been widely dismissed as fraudulent and organized to ensure the military-backed party’s electoral victory.

“It’s no accident that this election has been made possible through increased human rights abuses, from arbitrary detention to unlawful attacks on civilians, which has been the military’s modus operandi for decades,” said Ejaz Min Khant, human rights specialist at Fortify Rights. “As this crisis stretches into its sixth year, governments should focus on accountability and justice efforts for the many crimes committed by Myanmar’s military, without which the country cannot move forward.”

The junta airstrike in Rakhine state kills at least 22 school-going children and wounds 26 in Myanmar 12 September 2025 The junta regime’s airstrike has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 22 lives, with many of the deceased being school-aged children in Kyaukdaw townshi of Rakhine state. Additionally, at least 26 villagers have sustained injuries, with several people in critical condition. The death toll may continue to rise due to the essential nature of some injuries. According to the Arakan Army (AA), the junta dropped two 500 lb bombs on That Ret Ta Pin village, striking the Pannya Pa Khaing private school around midnight and 1:00 am. Eighteen children lost their lives instantly at the scene, and tragically, four more wounded children succumbed to their injuries shortly thereafter. Throughout this year, junta airstrikes have taken the lives of over 35 people, including the following incidents: 12 fatalities in Rathedaung on May 13, eight casualties in Kyaukdaw town on 14 - 15 May, and 15 people, innocent children, killed on August 15—all occurring within this single year.

Burkina Faso Expels Senior UN Official Following Critical Report

Secretary-General’s Report Documents Increasing Abuses Against Children

Earlier this week, Burkina Faso’s junta expelled the top United Nations representative in the country, Carol Flore-Smereczniak, declaring her “persona non grata” following a new UN report on violations against children in the country.

Flore-Smereczniak is the second senior UN official to be expelled by the junta, after Barbara Manzi was declared persona non grata in 2022, highlighting the junta’s growing intolerance for independent scrutiny.

The junta’s spokesperson accused Flore-Smereczniak of helping draft the April report, which documents the impact of Burkina Faso’s armed conflict on children. The junta dismissed the findings, which implicated Burkinabè authorities, pro-junta militias, and anti-government Islamist armed groups.

The report found 2,483 grave violations against 2,255 children, including killings, kidnappings, and the recruitment or use of children by armed groups and security forces between July 2002 and June 2024. Islamist armed groups committed 65 percent of the abuses, and the rest were by Burkinabè security forces and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (Volontaires for the Défense de la Patrie, VDPs), civilian auxiliaries assisting the armed forces.

The report also found a concerning increase in attacks on schools and noted that “the detention of children due to their alleged association with armed groups” was of great concern. Human Rights Watch has extensively documented abuses by all parties to the conflict against boys and girls since 2016, including attacks against students, teachers, and schools.
