obviously the next thing that should happen is that someone actually casts ben daniels as iago, which is a part he’s on record as saying he wants to do, and which he would be *dangerously* good in.
putting this out to the universe NOW, because these things take time to organise.
Once more
In the first scene of Act 4, Othello and Lodovico are talking because he needs to return to Venice. The problem is that they assume Cassio would be left in charge of Cyprus (because no one outside of those in Cyprus knew he was fired) but when the subject turns to Cassio, Desdemona does try to ask about reinstating him which sets Othello off. He’s yelling and her and strikes her, which is insane enough on its own, but he is practically incoherent from rage. He bursts out with “goats and monkeys!” Before leaving the scene, telling Lodovico he’ll return to Venice. “Goats and monkeys” is a callback to one of Iago’s in act 3 where he’s telling Othello about Cassio and Desdemona’s alleged lust for one another: “as prime as goats, as hot as monkeys.” (Apparently, goats and monkeys were known as being sexually active, idk??) . Iago uses a lot of animal imagery in regards to sex and Othello (you can imagine why), and Othello adopts that same sort of imagery as he continues to spiral under Iago’s manipulation He also perpetuates a lot of Iago’s misogynistic views…but more verbally/outspoken, chastising Desdemona for crying by saying women cry crocodile tears. Iago is not trying to hide this by any means, but he doesn’t actually confront Emilia for supposedly cheating on him (and if he did, it’d be more about his bruised ego than his marriage..). It’s all just a facade, but in a way, Othello’s outbursts are showing other characters his true personality through the wrong person. Everyone knows it’s out of character for Othello and is trying to find out why he’s acting that way when, like always in this play, Iago is just standing there like “who knows :)”. It’s impressive and infuriating how much dominion he manages to gain in the course of a couple of days
I am once again Othello posting.
Cassio and Iago are narrative foils. They both place a high value on reputation since a big part of why Iago does what he does is because he doesn’t get the lieutenancy, and Cassio has his brief monologue about reputation in Act 2. Cassio openly cares about it and is very upset with himself for being an idiot and getting himself fired (as most people are), Iago tries to hide it because he is manipulating others (“reputation is an idle thing” etc. Etc.). Still, they care enough about it for Cassio to ask Desdemona to help him get reinstated and Iago… well, Iago is Iago (and an ass)
“O, villainous! I have looked upon the world for four times seven years, and since I could distinguish betwixt a benefit and an injury, I never found man that knew how to love himself.”
Funny you should say that when the whole play happens because you were bitter and unhappy with your life. And that you’re a 28 year old man who spreads rumors about people’s alleged sex lives like you’re a spiteful teenager
And like. Iago is so bad. Just awful. Literally every character could have been all happy and nice but noOoOo Iago had to twirl his evil little moustache and ruin everything. Why Iago. Who hurt you.
Iago: “I lay with Cassio lately”- *Proceeds to describe a totally fake but DETAILED fantasy of Cassio. dry-humping and making out with him
Othello: *never questions any of this* “This is clear proof they have done the deed! Cassio must die!”
Audience: “Hold on, Iago, do you desperately want to screw Cassio? Seems like you put a lot of time and detail into that little erotic fantasy. Can we talk about that before we get into the wife-beating?

Objects used to stir up random conflict by people who DGAF about morality and just wanna watch the world burn. And also petty jealousy that leads to WAY more death than it should
(Iago from the Aladdin cartoon. He starts off as evil but becomes a fun dude after he redeems himself. I really like how much of a good friend he is to everyone. Even if he isn’t always nice, he does lend a wing when needed.)
