CS Fundamentals Unplugged
We’ve compiled a list of all of our unplugged lessons for you to use in your classroom. Now you can teach the fundamentals of computer science, whether you have computers in your classroom or not!
We refer to lessons in which students are not working on a computer as “unplugged.” Students will often work with pencil and paper or physical manipulatives. These are intentionally placed kinesthetic opportunities that help students digest complicated concepts in ways that relate to their own lives.
Unplugged lessons are particularly useful for building and maintaining a collaborative classroom environment, and they are useful touchstone experiences you can refer to when introducing more abstract concepts. Each of these activities can either be used alone or with other computer science lessons on related concepts.

The older group - aged 11 and 12 - got an advanced introduction to Scratch and game development + an extra hour of open discussions on coding and game development

We took a couple of hours to do an Hour of Code. As usual, I did an unplugged (tangrams) and an Internet based activity (Star Wars) with two different groups. Some students were really curious when they received the material and the login information because Computer Science is somewhat alien to them.
At first, some students weren’t very interested in the theory about algorithms and how to follow them, but after getting their hands on the activity they started to get the hang of the practice with amazing speed. Some of them actually started helping their classmates when they got stuck in a puzzle.
I think that the Hour of Code activities are a different experience for my students because they’re not used to solving puzzles and playing games in a learning environment. And even when they might seen reluctant at the begging, most of them seen happy when they realize that they’ve learned something new and they get recognition for their work.
Have you ever written a computer game? For that, you should learn how to code. Today, we’re going to code a computer game.
For the Computer Science Education Week I held two Hours of Code at Cecyt 2.
The first one was the Minecraft activity, where students were able to choose between the adventurer and the designer version of the game to learn about loops and conditionals and although they had their own computer to work on, many of them took advantage of peer programming to clear out their doubts.
The second one was an unplugged activity. Using the Graph Paper Programming worksheet, the students worked in groups to create algorithms that reproduced the images on the paper.
Both activities were highly successful and in the end every student received an HOC participation certificate.
