I’ve made this when I realized Zemus from FFIV is just a better Ghesist from Pokemon Black & White to me & they may not be “GOATED FF VILLIAN” or anything like that but it helps fleshed out Golbez especially given that he hesitated against Cecil & I put in a Soul Nomad & the World Eater villian that also does this but adds more to the game & why it’s one of the aspects it might be peak SRPG for me, maybe

12. What’s a headcanon you have for this character?
I’m kind of thinking about my endless list of mental illness i slap on this poor guy but to be broad, very much into giving him hallucinations. Some TAY moments fits so well with that. Just keeps hearing voices and seeing monsters (and my favorite, bugs everywhere). Also some delusions and dissociation but yeah I like my hallucinatory golbez.
For something more general… I like to explain his radical change in design as a child and adult with him being litteraly immaterial under that armor. So I consider the lunarians to be being of pure magic energy, only taking up a physical form when they need to (like interacting with physical beings like humans). After Theodore became Golbez, he slowly abandoned the more human part of him, eating, sleeping… When he got his armor, he completely lost his materiality and became more of a ghost thing than a human than a body.
So, when he let go of the armor, he needs an appearance again. And he goes from what he has. Cecils long pale floaty hair, knowing he’s still tall and menacing, memories of his mother’s darker skin, of comments on his unnaturally purple eyes… a mix of subconscious memories and representation of himself that gives him an idea of what he’d look like, and that becomes his new body.

DAY 1 - Future & Past: Timeskip, Sci-fi, Regrets
I know I’m super late to our FFIV week this year but I still wanted to participate, so I’m trying to do some sketches before the year ends. I saw so many lovely pieces and they all were so GOOD and I just had to add to the angst pile.
posting this early because i have raiding tomorrow and thus will absolutely forget. also look i can write about other people.
FFIV Week Day 3 – youth, undead (Golbez, Scarmiglione)
[[MORE]]The summoner was only a boy, though a well-worn one with hair as white as an old man’s. He was lying in a dug-up grave clutching a skull in his arms – part of the ritual, perhaps.
Shrouded in filthy fabric, the archfiend of earth scuttled closer. Grass wilted and died beneath his claws, the earth began to stink of rotting meat, and soon he was leaning over his summoner close enough to touch.
“You are Death, are you not?”
A strange question. “That cannot be summoned, boy. It is death’s absence you have called.”
“Oh.” A sluggish stream of blood began to ooze from the boy’s nose. “I want to die, you see. But I cannot do it myself.”
“My presence blights the very air you breathe. It will kill you before long."
"He’d save me, I think. He wouldn’t let me die. But I want to see for sure.” The boy spoke quietly, as though afraid of who might overhear. “Will you stay with me? Until I’m almost dead, at least?”
“No living creature has ever found my company agreeable."
"Not true,” the boy said. “Maggots live on corpses, right? ”
Scarmiglione’s jaw creaked, in the memory of a smile.
“It’s a second chance. Maybe not in the manner that you wished, but it is one, regardless…”
“That is what you say, but is that what everyone will accept?”
The most gender knight ever and his mafia boss-looking older brother shows up in Tokyo. what’s next.

:: there are old legends of the rivers of the underworld - of the river of black waters that divides the boundary between the world of shades and the world of us humans. by the waters of this river are the greatest oaths sworn.
[[MORE]]context-wise: i haven’t gotten to the part in ffiv lore where it explains Golbez’s Shadow Dragon (if it even does?), so i listened to the voices in my head and gave the ffxiv lore a spin.
Vala is the Shadow Dragon in this story (both for voidcast and 13th AU) and so far, is a young dragon that was lost in the rift, found by voidsent, and later captured in memoria - the same one that is used on Golbez in the Baron flashback.
in this story, Vala’s soul is forcibly entangled with Golbez’s body, even after Kyrie returns him to the world of the living. the two could not be separated at the time, since it would have resulted in their loss. at first, there was immense tension between Golbez and the young dragon (as you’d expect), which was only mitigated by Kyrie’s reminder that they needed each other to survive.
eventually, Golbez looked into the art of summoning since it was the last avenue of exploration in terms of magically fixing the problem. initially, “summoning” Vala came at great cost since Golbez himself requires the consumption of aether, but the two persisted in the art until Golbez could manifest Vala’s new physical form.
on that day, the two souls were bound together once more, not by necessity nor reluctant compromise, but with mutual trust.

I wanted to spend a little time introducing some of the OCs that are both a part of my Sygnus Stories projects and are also alts in FFXIV.
I’ll start with one that those who have read my Spot of Mummery stories might already know a little about – Ben!
Ben was my very first OC/NPC, created back in 1992 - yes, 33 years ago. This was in response to the ending of FFIV (FFII on SNES for us old folks). He is, to say it outright, my version of Golbez.

[[MORE]]Ben is also the start of me writing redemption stories for the misunderstood and ex-villains. Even as a teen, I knew that was my most loved trope. You’ll see that’s a common thread among most of the characters I introduce here, actually. Amon is in good company.
Originally, Ben’s story was my first ever fanfic – written back before there was an Internet in my life and I knew that the term “fanfic” existed. This is still up on the web as Coming of the Darkstar.
When I first wrote it, I could claim that it was in line with game canon, even though it has a lot of wild teenage fanfic ideas flowing through it. But then, the revamped story in the DS version of FFIV came out, as did The After Years, so now I have to claim my stuff is AU. I did not change my characters or stories to fit the change in canon (it happened 16 years after the original game came out!). :P
This story is where the term “Darkstar Dimension” comes from – something I often use to differentiate my characters from other FFIV AU verses, and also the Reflections of FFXIV. Ben’s a bit of a dimension-hopper, so he fits right in with the concept of Reflections and dimensions in the game.
Ben is most commonly a part of my webcomics Wayrift and the re-release of Shimmer (which explores Ben’s not-so-happy adolescence).
In FFXIV, I’ve translated him to being an Elezen and a Red Mage, which is as close as it can get for him.
Fun fact: I tired to set up a FFXIV RP blog around Ben a very long time ago, and it just didn’t stick for whatever reason. So now he hangs around as a part of the Spot of Mummery side-character crew.
I’d like to change that if I could figure out how!

“You don’t have to leave, you know,” said Kain gently, but Gol— no, Theodore, he reminded himself — would not meet his eyes.
“Of course I do,” Theodore said. “How can I possibly stay after what I’ve done?”
Kain smiled faintly, recalling his own struggles with absolution.
“Zemus controlled you. As you might recall, I’m quite familiar with that situation, and I’m telling you, you don’t have to leave.”
Finally, Theodore looked at him.
“You’re saying I should just pretend it never happened?” he scorned.
“I’m saying,” Kain smiled, genuinely this time, “that if I can be forgiven, so can you.”

“The Mysidian Trials?” asks Golbez, no more than seventeen years old.
“Oh yes,” Lugae snorts madly. “Three mystical tests on legendary Mount Ordeals to obtain the great power hidden there.”
“What sort of power?” Golbez asks his tutor. Lugae flaps his hand dismissively.
“Some kind of boon from beyond the stars. Worth a try, maybe, but be warned: the tests can only be passed by someone righteous and true.” He grins malevolently at his charge. “You might have some issues with that, young master.”
Golbez scowls.
“If there is power to be claimed,” he declares, “then I will have it.”
